AudioGalaxy Satellite - Easiest MP3 Search Tool
Written: Sep 04 '01
Pros:reliable, resumable downloads, small compact program, easy to use
Cons:server gets overloaded sometimes and unable to work
The Bottom Line: Better than any other MP3 search tool available. Beats Napster/Napigator, Morphius, iMesh..ALL of them don't measure up to AGS.
For all those people out there still trying to find songs on Napster/Napigator or even looking on the internet only to find nothing..STOP doing that. With the end of Napster came several programs that were said to be better than Napster ever was.
Note: Napster wasn't the first. mIRC is the original and is the greatest file-sharing program ever made
Morphius..iMesh..Aimster..probably at least a dozen more or so file-sharing applications out there that you could download for free and most of the time, they work quite nicely. After Napster was shut down, I began looking for alternatives. My friend had mentioned something called AudioGalaxy Satellite. I figured I'd give it a shot because I was looking for something new anyway and if it didn't work out I would go onto something else. Well, I never had to go onto another because AGS worked out terrificly for me.
The Program
Sometimes I forget it's even running because when you close it, it goes into your system tray and does all its work. Open it up again, and it is a small compact program with only the necessary options needed. No advertisements or full screen mumbo jumbo. In the window, current transfers are displayed with the file name, file size, and remaining percentage to completion. Options are also available such as change user, edit file sharing folders, bandwidth throttle, etc. The bandwidth throttle allows you to set how much bandwidth you want to allow the program to use so you can still use the internet and not having reduced speed. To begin searching for mp3's, there is a GO button located in the program which will take you directly to your home search engine page on their website.
The Website
Once you click GO, the page opens up and displays your current information. It shows if you have any transfers occurring or ones still waiting on request. Also shown is your sharing directory with all of the mp3's on your computer as well as recently downloaded files. On the page is an option to limit simultaneous transfers anywhere from 1-10. The site also has capabilities to search for users currently logged on and there is also a message board for users to chat.
The Search
At the top of the site is a box where you can type in the song you're looking for. I usually type in the artist first followed by the song title to narrow it down and exclude all the others that I'm not looking for. After you type it in, click go and it brings up the results. There are normally 15-20 different people who have it, but I usually just go for the first one because it's probably the one thats most available. To choose it, click on the song title which brings you to a page where you can choose your bitrate size, I always click on the "Most Popular Bitrate" because that's what works on cd's. After clicking on it, it is added to your request list or if it's available right away it will automatically be transferred into your folder. And that's it, file's done.
Overall, this program is extremely easy to use and user-friendly. You don't have to be a computer wizard to figure it out and the songs usually download very quickly. I would definitely recommend this to anyone searching for mp3's.
