Awesome prices are a key attraction (Reply to this comment)
by kcowan
We have been going to PV for some years now from Vancouver Canada and one thing that has happened in the last five years is the decline (and fall) of the Canuck Buck. This and the sunbelt inflation has made Mexico even more desirable.
An acquaintance has lived there for 7 years and the cost of living is about 70% of that in Vancouver. Another friend spends his winters in Scottsdale and he says that US$ prices are the same there as in Canada (i.e 35% higher).
If you live more like the Mexicans, the savings are even greater owing to the inexpensive nature of fresh fruit and vegetables. Also free range, corn-fed chicken, great pork, and pretty good beef.
I have bookmarked you web site. What a great resource for travelers. Thanks...Keith

Mexico gets a bum rap from the vegans. Truth is a vegan can eat like a KING in Mexico...
I can't remember the last time I've been to a place that didn't have an awesome selection of fruits at the breakfast table, and let me tell you, you haven't experienced juice until you get a glass of juice squeezed from those little greenish oranges right before your eyes...kind of makes you wonder *WHY* Tropicana et al. keep trying to make juices with zero pulp --- YUCKO!
BTW: There's a hilarious story in Carl Franz's "Peoples Guide to Mexico" about the trials and tribulations of vegetarians in Mexico. (One of the co-authors tends toward vegan habits). She went into one place and asked if they had anything without meat. "Chicken," was the reply she got. She clarified what she wanted, and was told "Beans". So she asked, "there is no meat in there at all, right?"
"Right. We use good pork in the beans." She gave up. A few weeks later, she ended up working in the kitchen there. She was making the beans with the cook and was surprised when no meat of any kind was used in the beans. "Didn't you tell me that you always use pork in the beans?" she asked. "Yeah, they told her, everybody wants pork with their beans, so we say we put pork in even when we don't."
Ah well. I thought it was funny...
Have fun!

Need to escape from Salt Lake City or Kansas City?
Well, today I got a new weblynx email from Frontier Airlines: they're offering fares of $99 each way to Cancun from either Salt Lake City or Kansas City. (Good for travel between 7/3/04 and 10/30/04).
Nope....there's NOPLACE left in the U.S. that doesn't have at least one incredible deal to Mexico!
Buen viaje!

I hope to take advantage of this when I get moved to Texas. My first trip will be to San Jose, Costa Rica. I checked out your pictures of your visit there. We had a foreign student live with us for a year some years ago and want to make a trip to visit her.

Great advice Amigo....it's high time I got myself down there again. It really has been too long. I might check out cheap fares from Fort Lauderdale.....you really have me thinking here. Thanks, Tom Barnes

Cool!
Do you already have specific dates nailed down? In the late July timeframe I'm planning to head down to Merida and do some of the Mayan sites that I've missed on earlier trips, plus head over toward Campeche. Was thinking about doing the new train trip, the Mayan Express, which hits a bunch of Mayan sites, but it's too pricey for my cheap bargain-hunting blood. If we're in the same part of the territory around the same time, we should try to hook up for a few drinks...
Chat with you later!

Hey Mark, Maybe we'll meet you down there. (Reply to this comment)

You are right on about good prices and deals just south of the border. We will be going to Playa del Carmen in mid-end July. Prices from NYC rt are $400-$450 per person to Cancun. Spirit has the best deal for us with a close Delta and American.
We are taking two of our daughters and staying at the Wyndham Maya, an all inclusive, for $136.00 per night. That's for two people. My wife got it through some kind of half price on line deal. We feel safe with the 14 and 16 year olds there. My wife and I will be doing a day or two in Cozumel for some snorkeling. We will probably do XEL-HA with the kids. We have done X-caret, Tulum, and Coba. We loved all of them.
Got any helpful hints?
Hope to share some tequila with you.
