Living with Atopic Dermatitis - Eczema
by bonniesayers | Jun 15 '04
Atopic Dermatitis (AD) is a disease that causes itchy, inflamed skin. Some skin will blister, weep or peel. AD sufferers always have very dry, brittle skin.

Thanks for the heads up. I've got psoriasis, and whilst I can't find anything short of a trip to the blue lagoon in Iceland to make it disapear, I find tea tree oil takes some of the anger out of it. Any other suggestions?

I too suffer from AD and eczema. I tried a sample of Elidel but it made my skin burn and even though the skin didn't appear any redder, I found it too uncomfortable to use. On top of all of this (or perhaps just related to it) I also have rosacea.

I can relate to everything you've written and I'll try some of your other suggestions. Tried prednisone once, not due to the eczema but for horrendous allergic reactions I was having. You're right, a very nasty med.

From one AD/eczema suffer to another, I feel your pain. I take some comfort in knowing others out there understand this ailment so well... Thanks.

Bonnie... this is fantastic, thanks for putting this together. I don't suffer from the eczema as badly as my sister, but, I'm guessing now I may have asthma! (I have symptoms but always blow it off... guess I'd better do something. Yikes.)

As a kid she used to bathe in some tarry-oily substance (by subscription?)... I'll ask her if it worked or just smelled funny. ;)

I'm going to read this again.
Really great info... thanks!

Most excellent review. I have a few friends and an ex-girlfriend that have had to live through AD, and they have all been critical of how they looked, even more so than other people were. I have tried my hardest to let them know that it's just like a birthmark of sorts, just an appearance, and even so you can find beauty in what others would ignorantly gawk at. I think it's a shame to let that lessen how great a person can be, and it's disheartening to think of how depressed people can get because of it.

I've had eczema my entire life too... (Reply to this comment)

...but when I was a young girl, my parents took me for weekly desensitization injections that I disliked immensely, but I guess they did help some because my eczema is now fairly under control. I do notice that becoming emotional or upset makes it flair up, so I try to stay calm! Sometimes easier said than done. Very good and informative review, Bonnie.

My son-in-laws family have both, and 2 two little grand-daughters follow his side of the family. I am sending this to my daughter in England.

Very much appreciated.

...I don't have it as severely as you do, I do have scars on my legs from scratching, and my hands are always cracked and bleeding. And you are so right, opening jars with bleeding cracks on your hands is incredibly painful.
Great, informative review.

Have you ever tried Aloe Vera? We had aloe vera growing all over the hillsides in northeast Los Angeles. It is natural and the thing grows like crazy. It doesn't require that much water.

My mother used to slice one open and put it on our cuts, wounds and poison oak/ivy rashes. It works!

was about 4 months we had her referred to a specialist because the body rash she had wouldn't go away. Turns out she has eczema.. they put her elidel, plastibase, and cetaphil lotion and shower gel plus all her clothes and bedding has to be washed only in dreft. She is much better now..only an occasional outbreak and the elidel works quickly.

I will bookmark those links for future reference.

This is a really informative piece - I hope you're successful in finding treatments that work.

You mentioned wanting to try a self tanner but they contain lanolin. I have one from Prescriptives and I don't see lanolin on the ingredients. I'm not sure if it's one of those things that hides under different names or not. I should have a review of it up soon, and I'll be sure to include the ingredients. Maybe it'll be one that works for you -

Good luck seeking better treatments -

Sue
