Gay Adoption... I'm fer it (Gay Pride W/O)

Jun 23 '04

The Bottom Line Not in a flippant mood.. make your own joke here.

This whole Gay Pride Write Off thing has been happening for several years. The last two I was here for, I declined joining. Not because I'm anti-gay in any way... quite the contrary. No, it was because the thing that I needed to write just could not be written yet. I think I can go there now... but it's gonna hurt.

Forgive me if this turns out to be shorter than I plan....

Let me tell ya a little story. I'll give ya the short version. There once was a very screwed up gal who had been severely sexually abused from the age of 5. When she grew up, she was a bit screwed up in the head, as you can well imagine. Well she eventually got it together and went to college and got multiple degrees. She eventually realized that she did in fact have control over her life and decided to not let her father control her thoughts. It was her choice. He couldn't hurt her any more. This was a major revelation when it came.

Before this insight, however, she put herself through some serious choices and bad moves. Some choices she made hurt a great deal, but turned out to be the absolute best thing in the world. One of these was to realize that she could not possibly take care of a male child in 1979. She couldn't even take care of herself back then.

Well, a neighbor of a friend heard that she was planning to put this child up for adoption at birth and went to talk to the young, scared, pregnant girl. This woman (we'll call her M) wanted a child so very badly. She had a dynamite job, made very good money, was in a stable relationship, had multiple properties, drove a Mercedes, and was just all around someone the girl came to look up to over the term of the pregnancy. She let M adopt the boy through private channels. The girl thought about this boy every single day since. She still does.

Now. This happens quite a bit. So what made this adoption so different? M is Gay. The law would not let her adopt through conventional channels. Many folks tried to dissuade the girl from letting M adopt because of this. How in the world could 2 lesbians possibly raise a well adjusted male? The girl knew they could.

They did.

That girl was me... and I've recently located my son. He is one of the best adjusted people I know. M and her partner loved him like parents should. Know what the first thing he said to me was? Thank you. That's right. He thanked me for placing him in that home. He grew up happy and loves M with all his heart.

I did the right thing for him.

All these ignorant laws that refuse to allow Gay folks to adopt are just that: ignorant. I cannot think of any couple that I would have rather entrusted my flesh and blood to. Nobody could have provided a more loving and nurturing home. Children all over are being short changed. There are so many kids awaiting placement and we as a nation are doing those children a grave injustice by not allowing them to be placed in these Gay homes. It infuriates me.

This is just one story. I hear all the time of some jurisdictions that go so far as to take kids away from their natural parents if it's found out the parents are gay. WTF?? That's insane.

I know one thing. When it comes time to vote, I will never go with anyone who displays any kind of anti-gay sentiment whatsoever.. including being against gay marriage.

Let's get our heads out of our butts and let these wonderful homes raise wonderful kids. The kids deserve to be loved.

I know this ended weak. I'm sobbing and just can no longer think or type coherantly. My appologies. I hope I made my point.
