The Bottom Line Tastes and Tales from Russia by Alla Danishevsky are fun and entertaining stories that your whole family will enjoy, not to mention delicious recipes.
The reason the review is in this section is because 'this masterpiece :O)' doesn't exist in the book section yet. The author of this book happens to be my wife. Alla has always wanted to write a book and had ideas since I know her, but now it is amazing that one of them has come alive. For someone who has always had a dream and a vision to do something creative, she came out with an incredible concept and the outline for this masterpiece. History behind the Book and how it came to life One day my wife came from the mall and told me that she has an idea for a book. Being that we were both born in former Soviet Union, her idea was to come out with the Russian cook book. She also told me that there will be a twist to it....'How about if my cookbook had a fairy tale next to every recipe?' The idea sounded intriguing, but still just in thought. Once she has started to research and put something together, we found out that there is more then one book can handle and she has decided to select only the tales and recipes that are the best and most popular. Well, once everything was in place and the 'tough' part was over, it was time to do the 'easy' task and find the publisher. She has wowed me there as well. Cook book market is very tough to get into and a lot of publishing houses do not want to get into it, unless you are a published author. We have tried to contact people we know and some friends, but still with no results, where suddenly on her own, Alla has found a publishing company who were curious and interested in the project. Well, then from that point on, the book was slowly born. Format The format is of a typical cookbook, where you have your Appetizers, Soups, Entrees and of course Deserts. There are 4 sections, but here is where this book takes the cake, no punt intended, to the other books in it's class. There are fairy tales and art work to make this book more fun to read for the entire family. The name of the book kind of gives it away, but definitely doesn't do justice to the full content. Content The book is 3 in one. First of course there is a collection of recipes from Russia. Russian as any other culture can be recognized through the variety of the dishes and the aroma that goes along with them. Alla has captured a collection of the ones that are more popular and at the same time close to her heart. She has taken some from her personal memory and the rest from a bit of research to make sure that the ingredients are easy to find and process is easy to follow. Then you have collection of Russian fairy tales that go along with each recipe. Russian literature is probably one of the richest and one of the most recognized in the world. There are Russian writers of folklore, who have been translated in many languages in the world. Alla has taken some of the older and most popular tales and put them together with the delicious dishes to pass the time while you are cooking or read to your kids at bed time. The last part that is also part of Russian history is the art. The old paintings and art have been also recognized on the world market as a huge contribution and there are some that are absolutely amazing to have and show to your family and friends. Personal Note Overall, I was shocked to see that my wife could do such an incredible job. Not that I didn't think she could do it, but the fact that she has truly accomplished a life long dream that she had since she was a child. I am very proud of her and think that it is amazing. I loved the process of her putting the book together, but when I saw the actual company with her name, dedication to the family, background, her picture and ISBN number; it truly brought tears to my eyes. Conclusion First and foremost....Do I recommend this book? YOU BET I DO. Yes, of course, because it was written by my wife, but here is more to give my humble biased opinion. You can use this book as a recipe guide, kid's novelty, art piece. You can enjoy it yourself or give to someone as a gift. It makes a great addition to 3 genres in your house library and also a nice addition to put on your coffee table. Take a look and I promise you will not be sorry!!!
