How to choose a Dishwasher...Is Miele right for you?

You've heard the hype (or maybe you haven't), but couldn't you get by with a less expensive dishwasher??? Find out.

What about the (lack of) disposal? (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for the full review. I needed an 18" DW a few years ago and after researching, chose Miele. I've never missed having a larger capacity (I have 5 kids and an elderly mother living with me) BUT I have definitely hated having to rinse the dishes before washing. Otherwise, nothing gets clean. I'm rearranging cabinets now and researching dishwashers again :( to find one with a disposal. My question is this - your review was thorough but didn't mention much about how you deal with the lack of disposal. Do you pre wash everything, as we have to do? I don't want to grind up a cake and candles but dream of being able to scrape off the plate and go. Right now dirty dishes are constantly on my counter and sink waiting to be washed before they can be loaded. Please tell me your experience or tips. I love Miele's quality but need a machine that can remove a dried flake from a cereal bowl. Thanks!

I'm always glad to know that my own experiences can help others avoid the pain and hassle. Our Maytag dishwasher was indeed a never-ending nightmare. I did a little jig the day they took that hunk of junk away. I still love my Miele, it was worth every penny!

If you are also putting in a washer/dryer, beware the Maytag Neptune too--I thought it was great at first, but now it's slowly becoming even worse than the dishwasher. Check out this link for the full review:

We are remodeling our kitchen. I had made one trip to the appliance store, ADUm, which carries high and low end products. As my house needs substantial remodeling, money is an issue. I had preliminarily chosen a Kitchen aid refrigerator and gas stove and a Maytag dishwasher. My husband wanted input and I wanted to do more research. Two days before Halloween, we were at a store next to a local appliance store, with asign that said Maytag clearance. I learned they were no longer going to sell the dishwashers due to poor customer service. I knew I no longer wanted a Maytag but wasn't sure what to get until I read your review. Thanks so much Debbi

Hi cdn,

I have not written a comprehensive review of ranges similar to this one on dishwashers. I have, however, written a review of the range that I own, the Maytag Gemini. You can find it at:

My sister owns this range as well, and she and I both love it. Take a look and see what you think. Good luck.

Hi Mothra3,
That was the most amazing review about Meile. I know beans about dishwashers, except I feel like you, and you said it so eloquently, most dishwashers will produce clean dishes only if you put clean ones in. Oh, yes!

The specific info re water temperature, cutlery rack, square configuaration and round arms, and even that it is the hot water that will finally get my dishes clean were revelations.

I hope you've got some opinions about ranges, too, because that is the next big decision, and you had such clear prose and great ideas.
