| dlockeretz's Full Review: The Simpsons Movie |
I was both optimistic and worried about the long-awaited "Simpsons Movie." The optimism came because I am a longtime fan of the show, and I believed that Messrs. Groening, Brooks et al would realize that this film would have expectations to live up to. The apprehension came from a feeling that television usually doesn't translate well to the big screen and that many films don't live up to their hype.
Fortunately, the optimist won this round. While the Simpsons movie has a few flat spots, it delivers what is expected--and then some.
The troubles begin when Green Day performs in Springfield. Though their music is well received, their plea to their audience to help protect the environment is booed--even as the barge the band stands on begins to sink into the polluted waters of Lake Springfield. This sets in motion a new plan to protect the lake from dumping. The strategy seems air-tight--but, long story short, Homer circumvents it, inciting the wrath of the townspeople, and even his own family.
The movie plays like a longer version of a typical Simpsons episode. The themes of Homer's ineptitude, Marge's patience, Lisa's social conscience and Bart's rebellion are all put to good use, but the PG-13 rating allows for some rather risque humor that would not have worked on TV. After an opening sequence which delivers many great unexpected gags, the actual "plot" of the film seems rather unimaginative, but it still manages to deliver a few twists and laughs.
The bottom line is any fan of the TV series will enjoy the movie. Despite a few slow spots, the film has enough of the inspired and edgy humor that has made the TV show so successful.
