With myself being half British, I've always been a huge fan of their humor. In my opinion, their comedies easily top the average American ones. Walking into Hot Fuzz, I was expecting a very funny film. Well, the flick didn't disappoint...
After Sergeant Nicholas Angel (Sean Pegg) is booted out of the London Police force for being just too good at his job and making everyone else look pathetic, he gets transferred to Sandford, where Nicholas finds out that the town has not seen a crime in over twenty years. The seconds tick and soon enough, he partners up with a bloke named Danny Butterman (Nick Frost). After a series of extremely gruesome events, Angel and Butterman begin believing that Sandford ain't that safe after all. However, the town's police force refuses to accept their theory...
The story is entertaining, and the plot manages to successfully twist and turn as the movie plays out. As you probably know by know, Hot Fuzz is a spoof of many American cop films such as Bad Boys 2, Point Blank and Die Hard. The only title out of those three that I have actually viewed is Die Hard...Well, and part of Bad Boys 2. My point is, even if you haven't seen the movies that Hot Fuzz spoofs, constant laughs will be forced due to the obvious blatant jokes and hilarity. One of my favorite scenes involves Angel on a hunt for a missing goose .
The acting is tremendous. I loved Sean Pegg's and Nick Frost's performances in Shaun of the Dead and I thought they were even better here. One aspect about Pegg's character that I really enjoy, is his priceless expressions and facial glares. Nick Frost does a brilliant job as the stereotypical useless assistant. Did you know that Sean Pegg and Nick Frost have been best friends for fifteen years? Maybe that's why they hit it off so well together!
Other worthily mentions include Martin Freeman as Met Sergeant and Bill Nighy as Metropolitan Chief Inspector Kenneth. Overall, the cast in Hot Fuzz is superb and everyone refuses to take each other too seriously, which I ultimately respected.
Hot Fuzz is divided into two completely different halves. The first half is dedicated towards character development and subtle laughs. The second half consists of over-the-top action and giant explosions, with no sense of logic whatsoever. Personally, I found the latter more entertaining.
Hot Fuzz is rated "R" and although there is some nasty gore, it's not supposed to be taken gravely. There is a scene where a man is thrown off a church building and explodes in blood and guts during his point of impact with the ground. Another sequence involves a women taking pliers to the neck. Be-headings occur and separate limbs are shown. But it's all fun! (Believe it or not!)
Overall, if you're looking for a film that will deliver amusement and plenty of giggles, Hot Fuzz is a great choice! Although it isn't the funniest flick around, this film is successful in its obvious intent.
