How could I miss the Great British W/O!

Jul 02 '04

The Bottom Line It gave me a chance, to write about the country, where I was born. That makes me feel good.

When I read a review, and it stated the "Great British Write Off!", I thought it was my duty as a British subject to write a review. So what does it has to be about? Write a review about something which is inherently British.

Well, how about me. I was made in G.B. I may have lived in Florida, U.S.A., for 16 years, but everyone tells me I am British through and through. I tell them that I am a cross between American and British now, and people burst out laughing.

Obviously, I cannot disguise my roots, or my accent. I tease everyone, when they say, "You have an accent". I tell them, "I speak the Queen's English, so you are the one with the accent". It always puts a smile on people's faces.
Both Len and I have a job to get off the phone. American's always ask, "Where are you from", or "Can you just keep talking". It still amazes me how much the American people love the Brits.

I still type and spell the British way. Up comes lots of yellow, when I proofread. To begin with, I got very frustrated, but continue to write that way. If I ever wrote a letter to my Dad, in England, and spelled the American way, I would be in deep ........ You know what.

I am in my element when people come up to me and say, I have family/friends in a certain part of Britain. Normally either my husband Len, or I know the area, and love to brag about it We loan out tapes of England, the Royal family, and anything else our American friends drool over. I really think the majority of our friends here, love the pomp and ceremony that we so loving describe.

Then of course, the house were I was born, in Maidstone, Kent, is still standing. My old school, East Borough infants/junior school, and Vinter's girl's school, I checked on them back in May of this year. I also got to walk down the street where I was born. Really neat.

Len and I couldn't resist checking out the school that he left 60 years ago. The building is intact, and so small. We were able to go inside, and take a look. It is not big enough to remain a school, but children use it for various activities.

Every year when I go back, I visit some of the churches and Cathedrals in the Stratford-upon-Avon/Warwick area, and also Maidstone . One of these is over a thousand years old. I also love to check out the grave stones, and the slabs under my feet, some dating back to 800 A.D. Now that is what I call history.

Britain is great. Well, it has to be when I think of the people who live there...... My daughter, her husband, my two little grand-daughters, and my old Dad.

However, I love the American way of live, and who could ask for a better place to live, than Florida. I thank the American people for accepting Len and I with open arms. After all, for the third year running, Len will be working the grill for the 4th of July celebrations, in our sub-division. Yes, it takes a Brit to keep the ribs, burgers, and hot dogs coming.

I am so pleased I stumble on Tom's write off and wanted to join in. I won't hold it against him, that he wanted the words Liverpool, U.K. in the review. After all, someone has to be from there. Only joking. If you want to join in the W/O or read more reviews, please click here for spiderkid's link.

Thanks for coming to Great Britain with me.

If you want to go again, I will be heading in that direction again next year.

Cheers,
Susie.
