Hi AJ... thank you so much for the wonderful compliment, that meant a great deal to me. Writing became a form of therapy to face and work through all the "stuff." Once I began doing that, I found it easy to share with others because I no longer felt ashamed or of lesser worth. Things that happened were just that, things that happened and didn't make me a bad person.

There's this town Canada called Sarnia, and I'm sure you've heard of it. But did you know that they have a trailer down by the water that advertises selling the best chips under the bridge!

Sarnia is less than an hour's drive from me, I may just have to go try their chips.

Have you been to the Gaspe Peninsula?

No, I haven't, it sounds beautiful.

Benny Hill. . .I remember watching that rascal with my folks several years ago. I think that Mark was still living at our place back then and enjoyed him, too.

He was so great and adorable too, quite a character. My parents would let us watch his shows and the Carry On movies (if you've ever heard of them.) Both had considerable sexual innuendoes but it was presented as fun instead of something dirty. Many see the British as uptight in those matters, but upon viewing these shows, that idea goes out the window. It was good, clean fun.

Thank you so much for stopping by, have a wonderful day!

From the two pieces I've so far read by you and your profile page, I can tell that you're a very unique person who can share both the good and bad parts (plus those in-between) of her life in a way that stirs ones soul.

And did I mention that I'm now hungry again and thinking that I really need to splurge on some fish & chips within a week's time!!!

There's this town Canada called Sarnia, and I'm sure you've heard of it. But did you know that they have a trailer down by the water that advertises selling the best chips under the bridge!

I've eaten them--many times!--and I can vouch for that. I generally have them with a dash of salt and some malt vinegar and have tried to recreate them at home. I've come reasonably-close but nothing like the original!!!

Have you been to the Gaspe Peninsula? If you get the chance, make a trip up that way. It might not be England, but it will find its way into your very soul.

This is in the province of Quebec.

Benny Hill. . .I remember watching that rascal with my folks several years ago. I think that Mark was still living at our place back then and enjoyed him, too.

He could be as ornery as cat manure--in fact, I wrote a letter of protest one time when I thought that he'd pushed the envelope for network TV entertainment a bit too far--but he was still a hoot (in spite of his orneriness and because of it, too)!!!

Cheerio! (Said with an Indiana accent)

Hi Patricia!

Thank you so much for your lovely compliments. I'm grateful that my father instilled in us a love and respect for the natural world, there's nothing quite like waking up in a tent and hearing nothing but the singing of birds.

I'd love to read your childhood memories. You couldn't have been that bad... perhaps sometime I'll write about my teenage years when I was extremely rebellious.

Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by!

Thanks for sharing your memories with us. You have a wonderful talent for describing your memories. I hope you get to go back to visit sometime. I think your father is wonderful for taking his family to so many camping adventures.

I couldn't write about my childhood memories .... we were brats ... and it would make everyone here go "HUUUUUUH? WHAT BRATS!"

:-)

Oh yes, I love a it of HP on my chips, or gravy is good too.

When the time comes that I do get to have a visit, I'll try not to have expectations. I'm sure the England of today isn't what I remember but that's alright, I'd just love to see it.

Thanks so much for stopping by hon!

No, thank _you_ Tom, for giving me an opportunity to get those thoughts out of my head, who knows how long it would have been otherwise. It's not often I sit down and just start writing and make very few revisions afterward but that's what happened here. I'm neurotic about what I produce and have had to resist going back and making changes.

My hope is that I was able to give people a picture of what it was like for me and perhaps enabled them to explore the wonders of their own childhood also. I'd love to hear of yours if you ever decide to record them.

Thank you again!

J you have a deal as long as you teach me how to write about music as well as you do, for I suck at it and you are truly excellent. Thank you so much for your kind words, they mean a great deal to me. However, I will not allow you to put yourself down for you are talented and I look forward to reading anything you write.

walk down (your) memory lane. Someday you'll get your chance to visit and come away with a fistful of new memories to go with the old.

Mooning over David Cassidy and feeling disdain for those who preferred Donny Osmond.

Yup. Did the same thing. Never could understand the appeal of the big teeth over the perfectly feathered 70's hair. :)

Wonderful piece Caroline. It's not easy to recount memories in such a way that makes them accessible to complete strangers, but you've done that here - and full credit to you.

You made me feel very nostalgic about my own childhood memories, and inspired me to perhaps retell some of them here at some point in the future. You've brought a little bit of Britain to everyone who reads this, who could ask for more?

Thank you!

that was a very powerful and moving piece Caroline. You just showed me the magnitude of your writing skills and how talented you truly are. I've never been to England but the descriptions of your memories made them feel like they were my memories. I could vividly envision the things inside my head as you had written them. Promise me one thing, you'll never leave Epinions. Thanks for giving us a little peek into your world and thanks a lot for putting my paltry writing to shame.

Simon, you're quite mad, but then that's part of your allure I suppose. Years ago we had a german shepherd dog we named Petra after one of the dogs in the show.

Your new write-off is beginning to drive me mad as I try to think of things I know will only get a one star rating. Quite cruel to put me through this torture so perhaps you've got even with me for making you remember Blue Peter.

Have a great evening!

Blue Peter! That abominable, devil-spawned "children's" television show. I just know they were sending subliminal "God save the Queen" messages over the airwaves during that program. Evil, I tell you. Evil.

Or not. Nicely done, Caroline.

Weird Cheers!

Thank you so much Chris,

a good sense of the displacement you must have felt

Ah ha! Now that would have been a perfect word to use, it's a very accurate description.

Perhaps some time I'll do something on my adjustment to being Canadian. I'll never forget waking up that first morning after moving here, turning on the television and being amazed at all the channels! That first show we saw made us think all North American's were mad.

Well done Caroline, and you brought back some memories for me too - Abba, those platform boots and the blue eyeshadow LOL

I'm glad to hear that, I could have gone on and on, especially when it came to tv shows. It was fun remembering them. Hopefully the blue eyeshadow is just a memory for you, it is definitely not your colour. LOL, sorry couldn't resist.

Thanks for taking the time to drop in!

Thank you Susie,

Yes someday I absolutely have to visit there and settle some of the things I feel. I'm sure I wouldn't recognize my hometown but would love to walk down the road we lived on and see the house, my old school, etc. Seeing the countryside is something I dream of, a camping and hiking holiday would be perfect if I can manage it before too many more years pass by. I've thought of trying to go for a couple of weeks but that seems such a waste of money to me, I would need at least a month what with the relatives still over there, all the places I'd like to see and a number of online friends I now know there. Oh well, hopefully some day.

Thank you so much for stopping by!

but you will do one day.

This is really beautiful. You have wonderful memories, and express them so well.

I left England when I was 40, and go back each year as a duty. I made a promise to my parents, and my Dad is still alive.

My hometown has changed so much over the years, but once you get out into the countryside, well that is just perfect.

Again, I hope you get to visit real soon.

Susie.
