Bang For The Buck
Pros:great action scenes, car chases
a few good plot twists
Cons:plot can be confusing at times
The Bottom Line: If you like action movies and can overlook a few plot errors then you will greatly enjoy The Bourne Ultimatum.
If you are looking for a non-stop action movie go no further. If you are looking for a movie which ties up every loose end from previous versions, then you may be disappointed. Those who enjoyed the first 2 movies in this series will want to make sure they see this one as well.
The Bourne Ultimatum is the 3rd in a series of movies about Jason Bourne, a black bag CIA agent who loses his memory while on a mission. In this episode we find Jason after he has taken revenge by setting up the person who tried to have him killed. There is now another CIA director who has decided that Bourne is dangerous and needs to be taken out. They track Bourne through Europe as he is tracking someone who he thinks can give him the answers he desires about his identity. Scenes in London and Tangiers make for exceptional visuals. The conclusion in NYC provides more opportunities for deception and chase scenes with one final scene designed to tie it all up. At some point in the movie you have to come to the conclusion that Bourne is indestructible after his numerous fights, car crashes and falls from high places.
Matt Damon is excellent once again as Jason Bourne. His reserved performance effectively portrays this confused and conflicted CIA agent who is trying to determine who he is and who he can trust. I found some of the other people cast to be confusing. There are at least two actors who look remarkably like characters from people who died in previous movies. There is also a scene with the "upgrade" who looked like every other person chasing Bourne. It was an important scene which I completely missed at the time due to the lack of identification of who this character was supposed to be.
The movie seems shorter than the 1hr 51min it is listed at and many of the scenes seemed to fly by. My 11yr old son said it was, "excellent" and "so cool". There is definitely plenty of fighting scenes and violence with more than a few shootings. There are many cars wrecked, bombs set off and people jumping through windows. There is no sex and very little in the way of bad language.
I give this movie a solid B.
Confusing Plot lines/ Spoilers below:
I had no idea that it was his girlfriend's brother he went to see. This could have been explained much better. You are just supposed to KNOW who this person is who's house he breaks in to.
There is scene where the CIA Director talks about setting up Pam Landy and blaming her for Blackbriar and Treadstone? What they don't explain well is HOW they are going to set her up. By her simply being there they will be able to blame everything on her? It didn't make any sense to me at all.
what was the deal with Bourne and Nicky? They alude to the fact that Nicky and Jason had some prior relationship before he became an agent, but they never explain what it is or why it is important. Even when he finally gets all of his memory back, they never really explain what the significance of this is. Since it didn't add anything to the story I wonder why they left it in.
The "upgrade" Blackbriar agent who is chasing Bourne in NYC is not well identified by clothing or any distinguishing features. He looks like everyone else chasing Bourne at that point in the movie. Even at the end when he questions Bourne as to why he let him live it takes you a minute to put it all together and figure out that, "Oh yeah. He must be the upgrade. Oh, is that the person who was chasing Bourne who he let live?"
Don't all new cars have airbags? It seems that every car in this movie somehow neglected to have them. Weird.
