| danl08's Full Review: Daddy Day Camp |
I was less than enthused to take 3 of my sons (6, 9, 11) to see this movie today, but I came away having had a few laughs myself while watching all of them yuk it up throughout. Having seen the previews for this movie a few months ago with my wife we both chuckled about how bad it looked and who would choose the short straw and take the boys to see it. After having gone I'm really glad it was me who got to go in the end. Fred Savage did a great job directing and kept it light and funny thorughout.
This is more or less a continuation of Daddy Day Care, an Eddie Murphy movie from 2003 about two dads who find themselves unemployed and decide to start a day care business out of the house. This movie begins by finding the 2 dads (Cuba Gooding Jr who plays Charlie Hinton and Paul Rae who plays Phil Ryerson) now running a very successful business at their End of the School year party. Many of the parents are discussing which camp they will be sending their children to. The 2 dads decide to send their kids to the same camp they went to when they were young. They arrive at Camp to find a campsite in complete disarray and nearly out of business. The rival camp is a state of art location with everything a kid could want and is run by Charlie's old nemesis, Lance Werner played by Lochlyn Munro.
Of course, they decide to help out their old camp director Morty (a nod to the best camp movie of all time Meatballs) played by Brain Doyle Murray, with a little financial assistance and an offer to help him run things. One thing leads to another and they end up running the camp themselves. After recruiting 35 campers to attend they have a disastrous first day and lose nearly everyone. The dads eventually come to the conclusion they need help and they need it fast so they call in Charlie's dad, Colonel Buck Hinton (played by Richard Gant). He proceeds to whip the campers in shape for the inevitable showdown with the rival camp and their elitist bully of a director.
This is a great summer movie which you can take any of your children to go and see. There is no foul language or violence to speak of (a small paintball fight is about it). The only thing that could be construed as mildly objectionable is the name of one of the characters (Jack Mayhoffer) which caused me to laugh out loud more than once. There are a few fart jokes and other 3rd grade humor which my sons found hilarious (and I rolled my eyes at). There are many opportunities for the characters to have discussions about winning and losing, and success and failure. There are some great topics for children and families to discuss regarding communication and hurt feelings. I would highly recommend this movie for young families.
