You have a ton of great information here.

Another free cool tool I like to use is Active Port, it does like Netstat, but in the windows environment.

..the restore disk on our five year old computer (I know, an antique by todays standards) and I am amazed at how much that has made being on the computer fun and speedy again.

You've offered lots of great advice here. I've bookmarked this review to refer to in the future. Thank you........Make it a great day.....kath

Yes, doing a restore will do just as well as re-formatting a hard drive since you are "restored" back to the way it was before. If you have added software or drivers since then, you will have to add them in after the restore. Restore is very similar to using Power Quest's Drive Image, or other similar products, which will take a snapshot of your hard drive and then if you need to, can restore it back to when the snapshot was taken. Great idea. Thanks for reading and rating.

Great review. I did the 'netstat' search like you instructed and I had 9 results of sites attached to my IP address. I think I'm going to go open a Hotmail account like you suggested.

VG advice here.

Patricia

What netstat does is showing you the current connections you have with computers all over the internet. Most of them are valid connections. If you're retrieving email, accessing pictures and graphics on a news site like CNN, MSNBC, etc. You NEED to be making these connections in order to get the pictures, the text, etc. What you should be worried about is the other connections to servers that you don't know, or aren't aware of. If you've ever installed a p2p program, there's the possibility that someone is trying to access your computer or has a connection to your computer. That's where netstat will be helpful, so that you can see all the connections you have and figure out which ones are the ones you don't want. Most times, there's nothing to worry about. I didn't mean to scare anyone.

Thanks for reading and rating.

Really sad isn't :(

I honestly find really sad that Bill Gates/Microsoft is sitting on a 56 Billion Dollar cash fund, but is just too greedy to spend a small portion of that to fix up his crappy virus and hijack prone Operating System and browser.

And this guy still sleeps soundly at night???

Fortunately there are no shortage of viable alternatives these days, and most security conscious firms like the FBI and a host of foreign governments have switched to Mac and Linux etc.

I think that by the time Windows Longhorn debuts, a lot of his big money clients will be Windows free.

By the way, excellent review, you sure covered virtually all of the possibilities, Gary.

Thanks. I've always thought that it was crazy that Microsoft kept coming up with bigger and more bloated programs, rather than improving on streamlining them and making them smaller and more efficient. There are so many programs that work extremely well that are under 1MB. I remember when Windows could be installed on floppies. It's no wonder why there are so many holes in the software when there are so many places where people can exploit it.

And although it's a lengthy review, I don't think I've covered everything. But, just be more informed because you're always finding something new.
