| danl08's Full Review: 3:10 to Yuma (2007) |
3:10 to Yuma starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale is a remake of a 1957 cowboy movie starring Glenn Ford and Van Heflin. The basic premise is the same, but the films themselves are VERY different. This new release features an incredible cast and unbelievably great visuals as well as a story which keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. One of the very interesting things about this movie is that good and bad are not as black and white as they initially appear to be. The good guys aren't always that good and the bad guys, while VERY bad, are not always what you think. Don't always be fooled by the black horse.
The story is about a rancher in Arizona named Dan Evans (Christian Bale) who has moved his family there because his youngest son has TB and needs the dry climate. The family has been plagued by a variety of problems, most of which are out of their control. The latest is that the railroad is coming through and their land is directly in the path. The person holding their loan is doing everything he can to keep them from earning the money they need to pay the mortgage so he can sell the land to the railroad.
Ben Wade, played by Russell Crowe, is a notorious thief and the story finds him and his gang about to rob a stage coach. The stories of the two main characters intersect at this point when Dan and his sons stumble upon Wade and his gang robbing the coach. Wade decides not to kill this rancher and his boys, but takes their horses and tells they can find them on the trail to the local town. Evans then saves one of the main "Pinkerton" agents played by Peter Fonda. Evans lets the railroad people know where Wade told him he was going which leads to his capture. The railroad and Pinkerton agents catch Evans back in town, but need help getting him to the prison train in Yuma. Evans offers to help them for $200 which will take him out of debt and allow him to keep his farm. The journey to get Wade to the prison train in Yuma is anything but easy and Evans has to fight off all manner of obstacles along the way.
This was an exceptional film which I would love to see again. Crowe and Bale were excellent in their roles and the rest of the supporting cast may have put in even better performances. Of special note is Ben Foster's portrayal of Charlie Prince who was Wade's second in command. His smoldering rage as he tries to free his boss from going to jail brings the movie to another level. He is instantly noticeable throughout the movie with his Outlaw Josie Wales outfit. His standout performance should earn him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting. The entire movie is on par with Unforgiven which tells you just how good it really is.
I highly recommend seeing this movie.
