For people who are not online gamers, something like Second Life (aka SL) is a hard concept to grasp. Many times I have had people ask What do you do in SL? and I simply say Anything.
The idea behind the game is that the makers created a blank platform and have invited the users to create the world around them. Many of the early and current players came from games like The Sims Online, where there were many restrictions on content and interaction between players. In SL, the restrictions are basically as limited as what you can think up or what the law or limitations of the internet provide.
When you first enter the world, you will appear in a starting zone in which you will have tutorials on how to walk, talk, interact, your appearance and so on. I would strongly recommend going through the tutorials, even if you dont think you need them. This game can be very frustrating to figure out basic things when you first enter. I personally gave up on the game for about a month and came back when I couldnt figure out how to put on a different shirt.
Once youve learned the basics, its time to play. Many creative SLers have come up with some fun and entertaining games within the game. Things like Slingo, a combination of slots and bingo, can be found all over the place with large groups of people playing together.
If youre a shopaholic
this game can help feed your addiction. Hundreds of content creators live in SL. They are on a daily basis pumping out new clothing designs along with jewelry creations and the ever popular shoes. But, the content doesnt end there. You can be whoever you want to be! Content creators provide body shapes, skin textures, hair styles, designer eyes and tattoos. Everything about your avatar is customizable
. for a price.
The level of role-playing in this game is quite high. You will find zones of furries (people playing animal characters), vampires, mafia, goreans, castles, and much more. If you can think it, you can be it.
One cautionary word
there is an adult and teen version of this game. The adult version can be VERY adult at times with high levels of sexual content and interaction. The teen version is a protected game world where content and interaction is monitored.
My personal experience in SL has been very rewarding. I have met some great people and spent lots of time chatting, laughing and having fun. Also, I have become a content creator, making tattoos, clothing and other items. This content creation has lead to real world profits. The currency in game is called Lindens. Unlike other games, SL users are encouraged to sell Lindens they dont need to others who do need them, to help promote a healthy economy. I sell my lindens on a regular basis and not only cover my game costs, but also have some extra spending money in real life (RL). There are some people I know of who have turned this into a business and are making quite a bit of money.
Overall, SL is an enjoyable game with limitless possibilities. As one friend put it
its the grown up version of Barbie dolls with better clothing.
