Please help with decision (Reply to this comment)
by lisarae143
Hi there,
I have been reading your reviews, and you seem to like a lot of the same stuff we do, and you seem to notice a lot of the same stuff we do. We are early/mid-forties, no kids, but we are big kids ourselves. We live near Port Canaveral, have season passes to Disney, love Disney, love cruising (wish DCL was cheaper!) Anyway, we are trying to decide between Carnival Glory out of Port Canaveral going to Western Caribbean November 29 or Emerald Princess out of Ft. Lauderdale on November 30 to Southern Caribbean. We have been on the Glory before, and enjoyed it but it was the other passengers and the ports (which are different this time) rather than the service or the ship itself. We have never been on Princess before, but the Cruise Critic Roll Call seems to consist of a lot of older people. We are not "party animals" by any means, but do want to enjoy the evenings, dancing, shows, etc. Any input you can give us would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Thanks Ander, I truly do appreciate the feedback. In the interest of truncating this monstrosity of a review to a manageable length, I know I fell into cruise lingo in a few places. I made some changes and hopefully things are clearer now.
We have really loved our cruises in general, although not so much this ship in particular. We're currently looking at taking out of San Juan next New Year's. It's my dad's favorite type of vacation because it is the ONLY way he can avoid making and taking cell phone calls for a whole week.

Hmmm. (Reply to this comment)
by anderclayton
Several of the comedians we saw were absolutely terrible. One was so bad I walked out of a show for the first time ever on a cruise ship. The new production show, Groovy Shoes, has some potential but also some parts that are just
odd. We didnt use Movies Under the Stars at all on this trip, mainly because many evenings the facility was designated for a child or teen gathering.
Hmm. I'm not exactly sure what these things are. Why were the comedians so bad? Was it just bad language or bad jokes?
What is "Groovy Shoes"? How is it odd?
I'd guess "Movies Under the Stars" is some sort of way to watch films outside or in a covered place where the stars are visible but it might be good to be a bit more direct about explaining it. Granted since it isn't part of this cruise's experience it might not be relevant but...???
Kinda random stuff given how much information you've put into your review but it kinda drew me out of it a bit when I had no clue about some of the stuff.

:) My folks are into cruises. This one sounds pretty OK to me personally and makes me want to check one out eventually. Never been on a real cruise myself except when I was in the Navy and that doesn't exactly count (not the same kind).

The Amalfi Coast was, I have to say, pretty amazing. My dad called it "the prettiest place I've ever seen in my whole life" so she is actually kind of right. :)

Wow! (Reply to this comment)

What a supereb review! I felt like I was cruising right along with you. I am DYING to read your review about Amalfi. Someone I used to work with is from there and she was always blabbing about how awesome it is so I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts about it.
As for the rude passengers, we had the same problem on our 9-day Alaska cruise. We've cruised 3 other times besides that cruise and that was the only one where we ran into issues with passenger chemistry. My mom said it had something to do with it being a more expensive and lengthy cruise and more likely to attract snotty rich people LOL. I'm wondering if there isn't some truth to that theory now.
Glad you had a great time despite the small bumps.

Thanks a lot, Chris! We did have a wonderful trip overall and I didn't want to sound overly negative, but there really were a few wrinkles. At least obnoxious fellow passengers make for good stories once one returns home!

Call me low-class, but my family finds we fare better with the ships not marketed as "luxury." They just tend to be more fun! We had a good time on our Princess cruise this January, but on the whole I think the line just isn't the best pick for me at this time.

Come now, David, you know I can be bought with good food.
I might have sounded negative in my review overall, but some things were done very well, to the point where the experience was average on the whole. I will also be eternally grateful to Princess for somehow finding and retrieving all of our luggage in Athens on day 5 of our trip after it was lost by the combined incompetence of the Venice Airport and LOT Polish Air. Stay tuned for my tail of LOT woe, which could be a best-selling novel.

Good for you! That sounds like a wonderful way to raise your children, and I certainly plan to do the same with mine when I have them. I don't know if cultural appreciation can be taught once someone is a rude adult.

Heh...
This particular family was the rudest family I've ever met. We had SO many run-ins with them. It's funny, even on the largest cruise ship, you still run into the nasty people over and over.

It was a different crowd - but it certainly wasn't the Europeans who were the problem! We could definitely have just had bad luck with the particular sailing, or even just the people we met, but it was just very odd how cranky everyone was. We may try Northern Europe via cruise some day well in the future, but other than that I think we'll stick with Caribbean cruises and just use them for fun and to relax.

We had an absolutely fabulous time overall. Our last couple of days spent relaxing and enjoying Tapas and Gaudi art were the perfect way to end! :)

your detailed comments on your cruise Michelle, and your hard (but deserved) comments on your fellow passengers.
I'm relived that the itinerary moved your star rating into middle ground.
Your detail and balance brings your review into MH category for me. Well done!

Into the Drink? (Reply to this comment)
by tombarnes
There are indeed always those few passengers who really beg to be tossed into the drink, whether by Security, or by their fellow passengers. Good of you to ignore them. I'm not so sure I could have. I had considered a cruise with Princess this summer, but was warned off it. I could just as well have read your review. Thanks again, Tom

At least you're sampling such an amazing variety in the Meditteranean! Chin up, etc., and stop threatening the help.
I think you're being very generous with the three stars, myself.

Movies under the Stars? (Reply to this comment)
by 2buzy
multiple fellow passengers who called Athens a dump and generally expressed disdain for the places we visited
An amazing thing is when we travel, it always seems to be the Americans doing this!
I have always worked hard to make my children appreciate all that traveling offers. I am the nutty mom saying, "Wow, look Kate, here you are hearing Big Ben - how great is that?" But I want them to understand how amazing it all really is and what a gift it is to travel!

What kind of People? (Reply to this comment)

Hey you mentioned ... "the family who threatened to slap the female security guards and whip out semi-automatic weapons when the ship was late to dock ... " You weren't traveling with the Sopranos were you? I know they seem to be missing from their usual place on TV these days.

Hi there! (Reply to this comment)

I always worried that European cruise ships would be less friendly, passenger-wise, than domestic cruises. More snobbish maybe?? Guess I was right!! You just saved me a bundle on a cruise! LOL!!!!
Really really great review.

It is a shame that you had to share your cruise with them.
Hope that you had a fabulous time despite your close encounter with the demanding spoilt brats of the Nouveau Riche.
