The Bottom Line Amoroso Maduro Torpedo #2 is a great smoke with an incredible quality/proce ratio.
Amoroso Maduro Torpedo #2
The Amoroso Torpedo #2 is a hefty cigar at 7.5 inches and a ring guage of 62. You don't smoke one of these beauties on a whim. You hould plan a whole evening around this cigar, a fine cocktail, and some good conversation.
The marketing mumbo gumbo and history go a little something like this:
(from Thompsoncigar.com)
"When the cigar boom hit, Nestor Plasencia, the great Cuban-trained master of Honduras, decided the time was right for a very full-bodied cigar in the Cuban tradition of Cohiba, known and coveted throughout the world for its forthright taste. Thus was born Amoroso, as its name suggests, a labor of love for Plasencia, its creator.
Despite his affection for Amoroso, Plasencia was never able to secure a steady supply of the great, deeply rich Cuban-seed varietals that he needed for Amoroso, and as for the production of a Maduro, the ultimate Cuban experience, that was altogether out of the question. Thus, the supply of Amoroso Natural was always limited and precarious. Now, finally, the acreage he and others put under cultivation years ago is producing its bounty. Now, finally, the tobaccos Plasencia insists upon for Amoroso are available. And now, finally, Amoroso Maduro is possible and even available at a price that will prove that a great Maduro cigar need no longer be beyond the reach of anyone. To sample a box full of love, try the cigar that Nestor Plasencia makes Amoroso Maduro."
I'm new to cigars (about 1 year - 2 cigars a week) but I've had my share of cigars. I've tried a wide range of cigar sizes, prices, origins, etc. and I have to admit that I keep coming back to the Amoroso. It has consistently provided a great smoke. If I were forced to pick only one cigar, I'd probably pick a Rocky Patel Vintage 1990. But if I were forced to pick one cigar to always keep in stock, this would be it.
I've tried a lot of Maduro's and on average I find the taste a little too strong with an after taste that I don't quite care for. The Amoroso, on the other hand, is flavorable without the bad after taste. to me, it is very similiar to the Indian Tabac Maduro's.
You can't beat the quality/proce ratio on the Amoroso. A box of 20 Torpedo #2s sell on Thompsoncigar.com (the only place I've ever seen them) for $45. You can even grad yourself a sample of 10 for around $20. How can you go wrong?!
