Pros: Transmission quality among the best, huge local-calling area
Cons: Spotty coverage once you get off the Interstate, some entire cities not GSM-ready
The Bottom Line: GSM, while it's the standard in the rest of the world, has yet to take over the US market. If you want or need GSM, look no further.

| Windowphobe's Full Review: T-Mobile Phone Service in Oklahoma City |
I swore I'd never get a wireless phone - it took me until the 90s to get a cordless phone - but planning this year's 4400-mile road trip suggested that maybe I ought to have one of these contraptions after all.
In addition to consulting the usual suspects (including, of course, Epinions.com), I hit up everyone I knew with a cell phone with pertinent questions, and sure enough, there was nowhere near a consensus on which service to buy, but only one member of my admittedly-small sample had any complaints about VoiceStream, so I decided this was the way I would go.
And so far, I haven't regretted it. Billing has been pretty accurate; the only times I have had to consult customer service, solutions were quick and hassle-free; and there's a lot to be said for (and within) a local-calling area that runs from St. Joseph to San Antonio. Unfortunately, one of the dead spots in Oklahoma City is right at my office, which is a nuisance (though going out to the parking lot buys an extra bar or two on the meter), and while VoiceStream and other GSM providers covered most of my trip pretty well, GSM is still unknown in some major metropolitan areas, which theoretically could have been troublesome for a traveler. (My phone - a Nokia 3390 - is digital only; there is no built-in provision for dropping back to analog.) Unless something really ghastly happens between now and next spring, I'll be renewing my contract.
