| gamegurus's Full Review: Are We Done Yet? |
In the first episode of this families life, in "Are we there yet" Ice Cube plays a man who is trying to impress his girlfriend by bonding with her kids through what should have been an easy road trip with just him and the kids. After putting him through hell and back he wins the kids approval and ends up marrying the mother.
In the follow up "Are we done yet", the kids are still acting like spoiled brats, and he's still trying to do what's best for the family.
The movie starts out with this family of four living in his crowded city apartment, and Nick trying to start a magazine company from his home. Within the first few minutes, it's very apparent that they are struggling to keep from snapping, which is when the mom (played by Nia Long) poses the question about moving into a bigger place, just before announcing she is now pregnant with twins.
The next scene worth mentioning is when the family goes house hunting out in the country, and their real-estate agent "Chuck" sells the family on the dream of having this beautiful 5 bedroom home, complete with a guest house, and mentions that it is a bit of a fixer-upper.
Once the family moves in, they find it needs a lot more fixing then originally anticipated. It reminded me of the movie "The Money Pit" from the 1980's with Tom Hanks, but less funny.
I actually enjoyed the first movie in this series more than the second. The immature kids and their attitudes really did more damage then good to the script. They were rude, disrespectful, and even down right mean at times to their step-father, without being reprimanded. As a parent, I wouldn't want my kids to watch this because I think it really portrays the wrong message to kids.
Nick was trying really hard to please everyone in the family and not one of them seemed greatful. There was just something about the undertone of this movie that really bothered me, although there were several really funny parts.
I think my favorite comes at the end when long goes into delivery at home, and Chuck who is a master of all trades power-walks through the mountains to make it to the house on time to deliver the twins. This is one of those films that made me really happy I didn't spend $10/ticket to see this in theaters. Worth renting though!
