Thank you for this list!!! After watching Glory and seeing the Deadliest Warriors tv show on Washington vs Napoleon I immediatly came here to see what were the best on the topic. So in short im saving this list and am going to start watching what i can depending on availability. Starting with Gettysburg and Ride With The Devil as i have just picked up these titles whilst browsing at Best Buy!!! Thanks again. Lee.

Your choices (Reply to this comment)

I agree with your list and I'm glad you included most of the movies that you did but I don't think Cold Mountain was a good choice, the acting might be excellent but other than the Battle of the Crater it has little relevance to much of the war as a whole. I think the Blue and the Grey would have been a better choice. Also as a history teacher I love this list but don't be to hard on Andersonville as a prison camp, one of my ancestors was imprisoned their but it is important to remember that the Confederate government poorly managed it and in the last 2 years of the war the Confederacy lacked enough food, water and supplies to feed many of its own people let alone POWs, at a time when the Red Cross did not exist yet. Also the Union POW camp near Chicago, called Camp Douglas, was not much better than Andersonville and unfortunately no excuses can be made for the poor treatment of prisoners in that camp.

Best Civil War films (Reply to this comment)

I have seen most of these (except it's been too long since I've seen Shenandoah). Basically 2 groups: the epic, sweeping films (Cold Mtn, Gettysburg, Gods & Generals) and the smaller, intense dramas with familial, personal war effects, etc. like Glory, Andersonville, Ride with the Devil, all of which are very good. Incidently although dated I still come back to Outlaw Josey Wales (and Clint) for one man's wartime torture (good insight into PTSD & revenge). Unless you enjoy history and are a student of the Civil War (like me), unfortunately many cannot related to the big scope of this period. Too bad because this is the event that defined us as a nation.

I absolutely agree with you on Gettysburg being top Civil War movie. I love the movie and I love visiting that place .. just something about it, you can actually 'feel' that it's hallowed ground when you visit there. Amazing place. Also loved the movie Glory .. don't know what took me so long, but just saw it the other day ... fantastic movie, very moving. Some of yours I haven't seen, but will check out .. I just would have included Santa Fe Trail .. about conditions leading up to the war, John Brown, etc. Thanks for a good list ... got me inspired to check out more Civil War flicks.

This is a super list and one that I am glad to have access to. I've seen many of the films but there are a few I have yet to see...for example Andersonville. I read a book about it years ago, I think by Bruce Catton and that is why I steered clear of the film until now...I was afraid it would be too painful to watch. Gettysburg is one of my favorite movies ever and my recent visit to Gettysburg was one of the most moving I have ever experienced. Shenandoah is another of my favorite films. Some of these I may just have to go out and rent and have my own private Civil War film fest. Thanks for this review.

Interesting list. I'm glad to see you included Gods And Generals. I thought it was unfairly criticized due to it's length and verbosity. Sheila

I think "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" is far better than "The Red Badge of Courage." But with "Ride with the Devil" near the top, I can applaud your list.
