MOMMAMIA’S ALL TIME SADDEST SONGS or What to listen to after the break upJul 25 '04 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Only listen to these songs if you really are looking for something emotional, they are pretty intense songs at times! SOMETIMES IT SNOWS IN APRIL by Prince (Under the Cherry Moon soundtrack) This song is based around the fictional character of Charles Tracy from the film Under the Cherry Moon. The lyrics hit me like a ton of bricks, it is so painful to listen to that I avoid it if I am in public. In the song it seems that Princes friend Tracy has just died from a long and horrible illness. Totally underrated song. THE BABY by Blake Shelton I don't listen to country music. I was flipping through the tv channels one day and this song was named the saddest song ever in country music which is pretty monumental if you think about the weep fests that come out of Nashville. A woman has a mess of kids and by the time the smallest one is born she is tired so he gets special treatment, after all he is the baby. His brothers envy his closeness with his Mom, they all grow up and away and one day he gets the call. Mom is sick, come home NOW! He rushes home but doesn't make it on time and he falls on his knees at her side and cries, just like a baby. Great song! FULL OF GRACE by Sarah MacLachlan I discovered this song thanks to the movie Moll Flanders, but it came back into my life a few years later. I lost my job, became very nearly homeless and was forced to live in a house with no power, with my infant son. We would listen to the Sarah MacLachlan tape with this song on it, over and over on this little tape recorder. I ended up giving my son up for adoption because I couldn't keep him in the circumstances we were living in. It is still a sad song for me BUT now it makes me smile because when I hear it I think of him. FAST CAR by Tracy Chapman Sung from the point of view of a young girl who wants to get away from the town she lives in. She comes from a bad family with an alcoholic father. She meets a man and she tells him, if you've got a fast car we can drive away. They leave together and she works hard for them to have a good life together, soon he is at the bar more than he is with her and their kids. She tells him, You can take your fast car and keep on driving. I love Tracy and this is an awesome song! NUTSHELL by Alice in Chains A poignant song about suicide and loss. Eerie because lead singer Lane Staley committed suicide after a very long struggle with heroin addiction. this one was a break up song for me and it always reminds me of that person, I avoid this one too. COAT OF MANY COLORS by Dolly Parton Sung from a childs point of view. A poor little girls mother receives a box of rags and since the girl doesn't have a coat her Momma lovingly sews her a beautiful colorful coat. The girl is thrilled but when she makes it to school all the kids make fun of her. Makes me cry every time. I have made my children listen to it because I really think it teaches a lesson about love and life. Dolly Parton is so underrated! IF YOURE NOT THE ONE- Daniel Bedingfield This was my baby sisters wedding song. It never hit me what a beautiful song it was, I heard it during rehearsals and when I made her wedding dance CDs. It didnt get me until I standing there trying to videotape my baby sisters first dance with her new husband. Watching them together and listening to the lyrics of this song really touched me. If you were to watch the video of her first dance you would hear me sniffling in the microphone and you would also see the camera shaking just a little. It is a beautiful song about being desperately in love and not really understanding why or how things could possibly not work out. TO MAKE YOU FEEL MY LOVE by Garth Brooks Actually Garth has allot of really good sad songs and I felt like I had to chose one. This is the one that hit me the hardest. The funny thing is it isnt really a sad song, just a man saying how much he would do to make a woman feel how much he loves her. You can find it on the Hope Floats Soundtrack. I'M OKAY by Christina Aguilera Recorded in one heart breaking take this is Christinas song to her father. A man whom she witnessed abusing her Mother. A glimpse at not only the vocal power but the lyrical skills of one very confused and very sad little girl. Those were my top choices and these are all in kind of random order, all excellent choices for anyone who wants some time to grieve for whatever reason. Theres a little something for fans of almost all types of music. WHEN YOU SAY NOTHING AT ALL by Allison Krauss and Union Station Another not really sad song that makes me sad anyway. it is Allisons voice that I think makes the most impact. YOU WILL BE MY AIN TRUE LOVE sung by Allison Krauss and Union Station lyrics by Sting from the Cold Mountain soundtrack I paid no attention to this haunting song until I saw the movie and this song crushed me. The combinations of incredibly touching lyrics and Krauss astonishing voice amazed me and left me breathless. BLACK by Pearl Jam Another song about break up and loss. I love it, lyrically it is very poetic and it is beautifully sung by Eddie Vedder. SHOOTING STAR by Bad Company A young man wants nothing more than to be a famous rock n roll singer. He achieves fame but soon finds himself caught up in drugs, he soon meets his sad fate. A beautiful, very depressing song. ALWAYS A WOMAN TO ME by Billy Joel A song by a man who is obviously completely infatuated with a woman. This makes me sad cause I haven't found the man who loves me this much YET but I will! Until then Ill be home listening to this balling my eyes out. JOEY by Concrete Blonde Sung from the view point of a woman who loves a man. The man has some serious issues and she would rather help him deal than confront him. Probably the only song that most people would recognise from CB, this is one of many excellent songs by an otherwise under rated band. Very sad, I love it! SUICIDE NOTE by Johnette Napolitano The lead singer of CB delivers this indelible story of someone on the verge of suicide. The vocals alone are incredible, Napolitanos voice is earth shaking. I HOPE YOU DANCE by Lee Ann Womack A song of hope sung to a child, just a great song. The singer tells the listener If you ever have the chance to sit it our or dance, I hope you dance! DANCE WITH MY FATHER sung by Luther Vandross lyrics written by Richard Marx I hate to sound hard but this one didnt get to me at first, I could tell by the title that it was a weeper. Then I saw Richard Marx at the Grammys excepting the award and he said that he wrote the song about his own father and he chose Luther to sing it because his father was deceased also. It killed me, now I cry almost every time I hear it. TEARS IN HEAVEN by Eric Clapton If this song doesn't make you cry, (even just a little) you have issues. This was written by Clapton for his son who died tragically falling from an open window onto the roof of another building below. The child was about 4 years old at the time, very sad, sad song. A prayer from a father to a son. LITTLE GIRLS EYES by Lenny Kravitz No one ever knows how much potential they have until they see themselves through their childrens eyes. Beautiful song by a master who seems lost lately, he should write more of these and less of those. (If you know what I mean!) BLACK BALLOON by Goo Goo Dolls Reminds me of death, nothing to striking about it but the opening lyric gives me chills every time I hear it. Babys black balloon needs to fly.... KEEP YOUR HEAD UP by 2pac Tupac Shakur was probably the greatest poet of our time. I have read many of his poems and they can shake you to your core. I just love this song, it deals with alot of issues in a positive way and it always touches me. FATHER OF MINE by Everclear A song for anyone who grew up with an absent father. Really good sad song. ANGIE by The Rolling Stones A song about breaking up. I discovered it on the Forty Licks CD and I love it. It is so heartfelt and so sincere. HERE WITHOUT YOU- Three Doors Down This one kind of became the soldiers anthem since the war with Iraq began. I personally just think about a bad break up when I hear this one, it always takes me back to a time when I was just there waiting for that person to come back to me. DO I EVER CROSS YOUR MIND (ANYTIME)- Brian McKnight This is THE break up song. Sung from the point of a man who wants to know if his former love ever thinks of him the way he thinks of her. He hears her footsteps down the hall, he still has her picture in a frame. If he keeps waiting one day she just might come back. MY IMMORTAL by Evanessence This one is another personal one for me, I like the band and there are other songs by this band that I like more HOWEVER my sister went through some hard times recently and this always makes me think of her. This song is about loving someone and yet really wanting them to leave at the same time. Twisted conflicted and sad. Nothing sucks worse than to discover you were alone the whole time anyway. ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE by Phil Collins This one is about people down on their luck and the people who think less of them for it. They play this on an easy listening station where I live and I always wonder why, I mean who wants to hear a song this sad in the middle of the night? I WILL REMEMBER YOU by Sarah McLachlan They used this one for a Columbine memorial and Laci Petersons funeral so it gets me no matter what. It is sung from the point of view of someone who is gone (presumably dead) who wants us to know that they will always remember us, dont let your life pass you by, dont cry over memories. They make it sound so easy! OVER THE RAINBOW/WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD by Israel Kawakamolokie This is such a beautiful song, so touching. Sung by a Hawaiian singer it is an interesting spin on two old favourites. It is melancholy however. It always makes me think of my little daughter whom I love so much. CLOSE BUT NO HANKY LUKA by Suzanne Vega HOWS IT GONNA BE? by Third Eye Blind Grab a box of Kleenex and a soft blanket and enjoy! |
