No sad song list is complete without at least one sad country song!
Sad is a staple in country, and you aren't a real country singer until you have at least one good sad country hit. The first one that comes to mind is "He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones, which is probably the most popular country song ever written period. Another would be "The Dance" by Garth Brooks which would probably be more recognizable to those less familiar with country.
My personal favorite is a song called "Better Off in a Pine Box" by Doug Stone. Sung through the eyes of a man who realizes the finality of his lost love when he sees her with another man, and the torture he feels when thinking of them together.
Otherwise great list!! Add a few good country licks such as these and it will be perfecto!

A minor quibble. (Reply to this comment)

"Sung from a childs point of view."
Actually, "Coat of Many Colors" starts with the line Back through the years I go wand'ring once again / Back through the seasons of my youth., so it isn't sung from a child's point of view, but from the perspective of an adult reflecting on an especially salient event from her childhood.
Otherwise, top-notch work, and I'm always pleased to read someone else who's in on the Dolly Parton love.
