Opinion Summary
M22: La Finta Giardiniera or Doris Dörrie's Goofy Day at the Garden Center
by smorg | Sep 03 '07
Pros: Amazingly effective staging of an incoherent opera. Well sung and very well acted
Cons: Missing a good ½ hr worth of music. Orchestra could be a bit funnier

Hey, thanks a bunch for your kind words! :o)

Nah, there are a bunch of really light and funny opera, too, Vasilis. One of these days I'll make you sit with me and watch the DVD from Zurich Opera of Offenbach's La Belle Helene with that Kasarova and the late van der Walt. ;o) Then we can take turn giving each other a slap on the back to prevent from choking from excessive laughing during the show.

Ouch! Yup, the thought of what made a castrato in those older days is quite unpleasant indeed, Diane. Have you seen the film Farinelli: Il castrato? It's about one of the greatest soprano castrati ever... I don't think it is all that historically accurate, but it is a marvelous film nonetheless (with really good soundtracks, too). :o) I have a feeling you might enjoy this Finta Giardiniera DVD. Doris Dörrie, like T says, is very funny indeed! :o)

Hey, there are some really comedic Germans around indeed, T. ;o) I must confess that on first look, I thought this production would be another one of those Eurotrash conceptual staging gone wild at the expense of the music (a la the M22 production of Ascanio in Alba), but Dörrie's staging really goes quite well with the music (if not the text... but in a Mozart opera, that is always the right choice, I think). :o)

Thanks again for stopping by, mates! Hope your week is going well!

Cheers,
Smorgy :o)

Doris Dorrie directed the only German comedy (that's an oxymoron right there) that I've seen thus far - 'Men' from the 1980s. Haven't kept up with her work, but based on that hilarious movie alone, I'd be curious to see this staging.

And V. Gens is in it, too! Thanks so much for the lively, lovely review and recommendation!

Have a wonderful week, y'hear!

That was quite an education! Superb job, tho, Smorgy.

I chuckled at your comic interlude (Sandrina/Violante ... still wants Belfiore back after all the unhealthful hard iron supplement he gave her in their previous encounter).

I cringed at the thought of the soprano-castrato as recently as Mozart's time.

And, your comment about how the orchestra could have been funnier interested me ... well, to tell the truth, it all interested me. Thanks for a great write-up. --Diane ( ... putting on her stocking cap and going up the stairs, now.)
