Impertinent Thoughts on Pertinent Subjects XL

The Bottom Line ...

Column number 40, who would've thought?

* Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers Band just announced a co-headlining short run of fall shows...talk about a great package. As of now, it's only hitting 4 states over 7 shows, but here's hoping they come up north and bring some southern boogie to the state of the irrepressible (and only option other than Shrub) John Kerry.

* What's up with Jimmy Buffett having the #1 album in the country? Look, if I could, I'd be first at one of his two shows at Fenway Park in September, but this album can't be THAT good, can it?

* And what's up with that new Saliva song? It kicks some serious f*cking a*s. IF their new album is straight up rock and roll, it could be the surprise of the year.

* Am I the only one who'd rather listen to New Kids on the Block's Cover Girl than that douche from Crazy Town and his solo schlop? Yeah, that's right, I'd rather listen to a NEW KIDS song than a Shifty song.

* What's up with Spin's list of the 50 greatest frontmen ever? Justin Hawkins and the dude from The Hives make it? Come on! Bruce Springsteen at ONLY #28? Courtney Love makes the top TWENTY and Eddie Vedder is nowhere to be found? Kurt Cobain? Freddie Mercury doesn't make the top ten? Jim Morrison in the top 20? Karen O in the top twenty? Liam Gallagher, who strikes that stupid looking pose with his hands behind his back on EVERY song? Honestly, that is Spin's worst list ever, without question.

* Am I the only one sick of the major music mags (Rolling Stone, Spin, Blender) all covering the same artists in the same month? Between recent features on Wilco and Modest Mouse, I don't know if I care to hear those albums after all.

* Can I just say that Seether really truly sucks? And can someone please tell Evanescence to go away for about a year, because I'm as sick of them as I am of The Beastie Boys.

* So the Nickelback/Three Doors Down tour blew through town a couple of weeks back. The critics said that Chad Kroeger (lead windbag of Nickelback) looked bored singing his songs...well wouldn't you be? Besides, if you're getting blown off the stage by TDD (as one critic basically said), how much of a sh*t live act must you be?

* It looks like The Calling will this year be the winners of the award for "we got a ton of radio airplay and sold d*ck for records," which last year was of course a tie between Liz Phair's lame attempt at selling out and Live's forgotten Birds of Prey.

* A request to Boston radio: can I hear that new Alter Bridge song a couple of times? You know, I mean somewhere in between your hourly a*s lickings of Jet, The Beasties, and Linkin Park. I'd like to figure out if they're worth my time now that Tremonti and Phillips have dumped Jesus Boy, thank you.

* Congratulations are in order to Ani DiFranco for being the latest artist to release "official bootlegs." Rock on Ani!

* Am I the only one who doesn't get that excited anymore when it's announced that a new R.E.M. album is just a couple of months away?

* It turns out Limp Bizkit turned down an offer to be on Linkin Park's tour this summer, because they didn't want to be first on stage. Hence, Less Than Jake getting the offer and accepting. Meanwhile, Fred Durst is at home this summer, jerking off and thinking he's still "big." In the words of Minor Threat: "think again."

* Am I the only one who thinks the fact that Jay Z got up on stage with Phish and did two songs with them is f*cking bada*s?

* Ah, what a nice world it is without Eamon f*cking it up, eh?

* But then again, you have Nina Sky f'ing it up almost as bad, so maybe it isn't so nice after all...

* Now really, was there any real need for Mase to rap again?

* Sugarcult might just be whiny enough to give Dashboard Confessional a run for their title of "whiniest band ever."

* Five songs I would be happy to never ever hear again: Our Lips Are Sealed, This Love, The Reason, Everytime, and Ocean Avenue

* You know, sometimes I wonder how Shrub got elected, but then I see that Juvenile has the #1 song in the country and you know, all of a sudden it begins to make sense. Honestly, I'd rather listen to Hammer's Pumps and a Bump or Wreckx N Effectx Rump Shaker than that pile of rhinocerous sh*t.

* Who knew we had a musical star amongst the music section? They might say his name is Kevin Lyttle, but some of us know better, that it's really our own Speeddemon.

* Chris Rock spoofing Hey Ya? I'm so there...

Non Music Thought of the Month

Jason Varitek's face washing of Alex Rodriguez summed up perfectly why many Boston fans just don't get it. We may have won the game (and the series), but when it comes down to it, the Yankees are for all intents and purposes already in the playoffs, while we're struggling with the likes of the Baltimore Orioles. It's all fine and dandy to build your team for the playoffs...but you should remember that that does you no good if you don't make it to them in the first place.
