So, I decided to give Netflix a try, since the last time I went to my local video store, I was appalled at the price of renting a movie- $4.99 for 1 VHS tape, and it had to be back in a few days. I thought that was a rip off, plus I had to take time out to return the movie back to the store. I have been using Netflix since the 4th of July weekend.
About Netflix (from website):
Netflix is offering more than 6.7 million subscribers access to 85,000 DVD titles plus a growing library of over 4,000 full-length movies and television episodes that are available for instant watching on their PCs.
So, how does it work?
You visit www.netflix.com and sign up. Of course, there are different movie plans, and here is a list of them:
1 at-a-time (2 a month) - just $4.99 a month
1 at-a-time (Unlimited) - just $8.99 a month
2 at-a-time (Unlimited) - just $13.99 a month
3 at-a-time (Unlimited) - just $16.99 a month
4 at-a-time (Unlimited) - just $23.99 a month
5 at-a-time (Unlimited) - just $29.99 a month
6 at-a-time (Unlimited) - just $35.99 a month
7 at-a-time (Unlimited) - just $41.99 a month
8 at-a-time (Unlimited) - just $47.99 a month
I chose the 1 at a time Unlimited for $8.99 a month, plus tax is charged in my home state of Tennessee. I had a two week free trial, and I was charged after the 14th day to my credit card. I was really surprised at how many movies and TV shows Netflix had to offer.
Heres a list of all the genres available:
Action and Adventure
Children and Family
Documentary
Faith and Spirituality
HD DVD
Musicals and Music
Special interest
Thrillers
Anime and Animation
Classics
Foreign
Horror
Romance
Sports and Fitness
Blu Ray
Comedy
Drama
Gay & Lesbian
Independent
Sci Fi and Fantasy
Television
After you get registered, you add movies to your queue. You can use their search feature to find movies, or search by actors, and directors. If you rate movies you have seen, Netflix will provide a list of suggested movies for your particular interests. You can also choose your favorite genres, and you will be able to select them on your personalized page so you can browse those categories, and youll have more suggested movies from those areas.
Once you find a movie you want to add to your list, simply hit the add button, and it will be added to your list. You can organize your list as to how you want them to ship, and its really easy to organize. You can also add movies that have not come out on DVD yet like I do, because Ill see a preview for something and want to see it, but I know months later Ill forget what it was. They will be in the saved section of your queue, and once it comes out on DVD it will be added to your list. You can also create separate queues, for example you could have one for yourself and one for your kids, but I prefer to keep it simple and just have one list for all of us. Also, I dont use the option of viewing on my PC, and with my particular plan you can have 2 views a month, but do note that with different plans you have a different number. I just prefer to get a DVD and watch it in the living room.
Also, Netflix offers previously viewed DVDs for sale for $5.99. I havent used this feature, but there is not as much selection as retail stores.
So, once you get a list all figured up (which I think it will hold up to 400 at a time), itll take a day or so for your first movie to be shipped to you from the nearest Netflix facility near you. The movie will come in a red envelope, and once you open it, it will turn into a postage paid envelope that you will send your movie back in via USPS.
Watch your movie that day, the next, next week, 3 weeks from now, whenever- there are no late fees associated with Netflix. With my plan, I only have 1 DVD at a time, which works fine for me, once you send it back and when they receive it, you get the next DVD on your list. The nearest Neflix facility to me is in Memphis, which is 65 miles west of me, so it has a day turnaround when I get my next movie.
Do note though that they only ship movies Monday through Friday, and not on weekends, so if you send a movie back on Thursday or Friday, you wont get your next one shipped until the following week. I find that if we watch the movie we get the same day we get it, we can get 2 movies a week.
As far as availability, I havent had any problems with that, most of the movies I want to see have been out a while anyway, so I have always gotten the DVD that was next on my list. I only had a problem with one DVD not working, we were in the middle of the movie and the DVD quit working, and I immediately reported it to Netflix, and they sent another replacement DVD of the same movie the next day, without having to receive the broken DVD first.
Overall, I am really pleased with Netflix- we get movies we want to see delivered to us, no rental places to go back to, no late fees, and plenty of selection. I also think it is well priced, for $9.87 per month ($8.99 + tax) I can get about 8 movies per month if I watch them and send them right back on the same day. Which is way better than 1 for $4.99 for a few days. I highly recommend it- I have had no trouble whatsoever with the shipping, and I really enjoy it.
