Shoes, Shoes Everywhere!
Written: Sep 07 '07 (Updated Sep 07 '07)
Pros:see-through containers, drawers easily slide open, containers stack
Cons:drawers dont anchor in place when stacked
The Bottom Line: Organizing my shoes allowed me to clean house. I donated to Big Brother / Big Sister those shoes I no longer wore. These boxes were not the ideal storage solution.
Examining my out-of-control shoe situation ... I decided I needed to organize! I had shoes on the floor, in the closet and even stuffed in a tote-bag. I did not have floor space for a shoe tree, and my closet and bedroom door would not accommodate a hanging shoe organizer. Then while in the Container Store, I found these Clear Shoe Drawers (Model # 4010).
Description
These drawers are a regular size (7" x 12" x 4" high). They are constructed from Crystal Clear Plastic. The drawers are part of a modular set, meaning they can be stacked atop one another. Other drawers are available in the set in different sizes, and all the different sizes can be combined.
Not just for shoes, they can be used for storing all types of things such as crafts, toiletries, small pieces of clothing such as socks or scarves, and even toys.
My Experiences
I will say it up front. These did not work for me. I bought ten of them with shoe storage in mind. The Container Store had these drawers on display with shoes in them, and the drawers looked like an ideal solution. I especially liked that the clear plastic allowed me to easily see the drawers contents.
In my room is a piece of wood furniture that Ive owned for years. It has four drawers in it and only stands about three feet high. Stacking these drawers atop the furniture offered a great shoe storage solution. As the home decorator/organizing shows on the Home & Garden channel are always saying ... go vertical.
While in the store, I wavered between buying these drawers and another set. This set of drawers feels like they are made from a hard clear plastic material that might crack if dropped or if stacked with too much weight. The other set of drawers was constructed from a frosted-clear soft plastic that I knew would not crack. But I was swayed by the see-through hard plastic and purchased these drawers.
The drawers easily glide open ... like they are sliding on ice. I loved the easy way they opened. When I arrived home I stacked the drawers side-by-side so that there were two next to each other, and they stacked five high (for a total of ten drawers). I figured if I liked they way they worked, I would buy more later.
They stack well atop each other. However, the drawers do not snap or anchor in place. I was hoping the weight of the shoes would keep the boxes stationary. Not so. Every time I opened a drawer, the boxes shifted. They actually pulled free with the entire box moving toward me since nothing was anchoring them in position. Also, the drawers slide open so easily that they tend to open when you dont want them to. Very annoying.
I wear a size 9 or 9 1/2 shoe in a wide width. These shoe boxes would not hold certain style shoes. They were fine for slippers, slim sandals, and a few flats, but not much else. When I returned the boxes, I went over to the display and noticed that the boxes held size 7 and 7 1/2 medium womens pumps and sandals.
So I returned all ten of these shoe boxes. The Container Store had no problem accepting back the merchandise. I then bought the other drawers I had considered buying (read my review of the Large Tint Stacking Drawers. Those are working great!
Purchasing
Each of these drawers cost $6.99 at my local Container Store.
Summary
Buying shoe containers is more stressful than purchasing the shoes to go in them! The Clear Shoe Drawers (Model # 4010) did not work for me for a variety of reasons. Based on my experiences, I cannot recommend them.
I hope you found this review useful.
