Caveat Emptor! The ancient warning is applicable today as it has always been and especially so with Newegg.
They cheated me out of a rebate on a laptop that I bought from them and lied to me in the process.
Their online offer cited a $100 rebate with a particular laptop purchase. Since this was the machine that I was looking for the rebate made it a good deal. There was no other information given about just how to get the rebate, so one would think that it would happen because Newegg certainly knew that I had bought and paid for the machine.
When I inquired about the rebate, after the package arrived, I was told that I need to download the rebate request form and fill it out and send it to Newegg. To my chagrin, the form required the original UPC which was on the wrapping which of course I had disposed of as soon as I tested the computer and found it to be satisfactory. I contacted them and told them that this was not possible, but I could photograph the UPC on the machine and mail that to them. I was told that this would be OK.
Several weeks later when I inquired about the status of the rebate, having heard nothing from Newegg, I was told that this was not their concern since the manufacturer provided the rebate. There was no prior indication of this, since I dealt only with Newegg and their rebate offer made no mention of the manufacturer providing the rebate. The rebate form was Newegg's and it was to be mailed to them
Several weeks later, I checked the rebate status on the Newegg web site and saw that Newegg had rejected the rebate because of the UPC. They obviously lied, since it was indeed Newegg and not the manufacturer in charge of the rebate.
I believe that they deliberately set up a trap to make the rebate noncollectable. This is a very shoddy business practice and I believe that all potential customers should be warned.
