When it comes to life these days, almost everything new to the market wants to simplify a part of your day. It is amazing how far just the concept of a "microwave oven" has developed. Do you remember the dial and how large they were? Now they come in an array of sizes from compact to above the stove.
Recently I was invited to try out a new product hitting the market, GLAD SimplyCooking Microwave Steaming Bags. I wasn't sure what to expect when I received the letter size package from UPS. I had never heard of the product itself or known of a competitive one available that had already hit the shelves.
The bag is clear and at first I thought a bit odd shaped. There is an illusion that the lower corners are cut off when in fact they open up to make the bottom of the bag fit more inside. The bag is made of is very sleek clear plastic. It is definitely made to hold food without breaking. There is a zip lock system that opens and closes securely.
The concept of what the GLAD SimplyCooking Microwave Steaming Bags is about comes down to "Fill, Seal, and Cook." You can take frozen or fresh vegetables and fill the bag. Seal it with the zipper and push the amount of time needed on your microwave to cook. On the bag there are small thumbnail pictures of different vegetables from carrots to broccoli. It helps give you a guideline of how long to put the bag in the microwave. There is a difference between fresh and frozen which GLAD breaks down for you.
Do they work? Sure they do. Was it simple? Definitely. What's wrong then? Garbage. It creates more garbage. Why not have GLAD get together with the frozen pea company and sell them that way? I can understand steaming the fresh vegetables inside but I guess I consider that to be a bit lazy. Personally it has not taken me very long to cook or steam any vegetables fresh or frozen that makes a mess. By using the GLAD SimplyCooking Microwave Steaming Bags I fill up a landfill that much more.
The only reason that I do recommend this product is the fact that they work. They keep the vegetables warm after you take them out of the microwave before plating them. When you adjust your microwave to the vegetables whether fresh or frozen, they taste fine. I didn't have any discoloration or unappetizing issues when it came to using the bags. It does limit how much you can fit though. For my fiance and I the bag holds just enough vegetables. However for a family of four, I am not so sure it would be big enough.
Even though they do work, I would rather use the steamer I have. It doesn't take much to clean and I would rather not create more garbage. I don't have the luxury of recycling in my apartment complex where I see many of neighbors not taking the time to do it. I do it on my own. However I was informed that these bags show no sign of being recyclable and acceptable. I would check that out further if I planned on using them on a continuous basis, but I in my case, I won't.
The pricing of 10 for $2.99 I think is reasonable for the average customer. It is affordable for someone like me who lives paycheck to paycheck most of the time.
For just my house of two, this product would not be worth buying. Larger families may find them helpful but you also need to keep in mind that you can only put so much inside it. GLAD claims that it can hold 3-4 servings of vegetables but I would have to disagree.
All in all, the GLAD SimplyCooking Microwave Steaming Bags work. They are reasonably priced. The steamed food seems to taste ok. But it adds to garbage which I am not a fan of. I don't think you can use them more than once although it didn't say whether or not on my directions. I am just assuming. For now I will stick to my steamer using water. However the GLAD SimplyCooking Microwave Steaming Bags are an alternative, I am just not one that will be continuing to purchase any.
I would like to thank Fleishman-Hillard, Inc. for allowing me to try their product and review it in exchange for my unbiased opinion.
Thank you for Reading!
