| jican's Full Review: Hampton Bay Dana Point Umbrella 362498 |
My patio umbrella was unable to make it's debut this past spring, it was weathered, worn and tipped over my table with the wind. While shopping in Home Depot one day, I found this Hampton Bay Dana Point Umbrella for $149.99. This umbrella was vented at the top and so I placed my over-sized selection into my cart and it came home with me.
THE UMBRELLA
This market umbrella is well made of a lightweight, coated aluminum, with six square ribs holding the fabric in place. It is hexagon shaped, from rib tip to rib tip, with no fringes or hang-over. It hangs well and extends over my 48 inch glass top patio table and swivel chairs. My patio set now appears "well hatted".
CONSTRUCTION
The ribs of the umbrella are square shaped, enhancing the strength of it, during gusts or winds. The neutral toned canvas covering is attached to the ends of these ribs with a deep pocket, ensuring it to stay. Attached to the outside of the canvas covering are two straps (that I tie in a bow), which will secure the umbrella when closed.
At the top of the umbrella, it appears that there is a loosely placed mini-umbrella. It overlaps an opening at the top. This is a vent, which allows gusts or wind to flow through, without taking off, like Mary Poppins. My umbrella is placed in a cement base, under the table to prevent my glass top table from tipping over.
MECHANICS
To open the umbrella, simply crank the handle, and the umbrella opens with ease. The vent rests on top of the umbrella loosely and is anchored to the pole and the ribs of the canvas. About 3/4 of the way up the pole is a push button tilt device, to block out the sun or strong winds. I'm 5'4" in height and have no trouble reaching this button.
USAGE
I purchased this umbrella in May and have opened it only once. It has remained open through the entire summer season on Long Island, N.Y., without tilting, going aloft or knocking over my glass top patio table. The canvas has not faded or streaked. From my kitchen, I have a view of my patio, and love the scene of my patio set, surrounded by geraniums and assorted flowers, topped off by this lovely extended umbrella. I am delighted with this purchase. The vent makes sense and keeps this umbrella in its place.
This umbrella comes with a one year limited frame and fabric warranty.
