100th Review Day Off - Top 10 Best Anime Songs

The Bottom Line This would be me taking a day off to honor my 100th entry here.

Wow... 100 reviews. Here I am at a milestone of Epinions. Take a look through the database of reviewers and see how many of them made it even this far... not as many as one might expect. Some give up early and some of us press on and I'm happy to have made it to this point, especially since I'm just a little anime reviewer.

For those of you who have stuck with me thus far, I thank you. It is your continued support and views to my reviews that keep me writing. But alas, every 50 reviews I make it a habit to write not a review, but something more fun. Something that isn't going to earn any money... just something I want to do. For review number 50, I put up a short get to know you survey* but for this one, I'm going to do something that is a bit more related to my field.

Top 10 lists are a big deal on Epinions as it seems that just about everyone has done one at some point... well now it's my turn! Now, if I wanted to take the easy route out I could just write my top 10 favorite anime series but really what's the fun in that? I could name my top 10 series off the top of my head without even thinking about it. Which is why I've decided to make it just a notch harder. Instead of naming my top 10 series, I have chosen my top 10 anime songs of all time!

So let's get this list started already because frankly this is becoming the longest intro I've ever written in my life......

10. "Y'Know" from Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040: In this series, one of the lead characters is named Priss Asigari and she is the lead singer of a hard rock band. This song is one of her band's songs and it rocks hard core! Starting with an incredibly harsh guitar section, it quickly moves into the powerful vocals. Normally a song of this style would place much higher on my list but it just doesn't have the drive behind it to push past position 10 on this list.

Favorite Lyrics:
"Logic won't help us understand, you know,
what it is that our hearts want.
Noone can know what that is, you know.
There's no need for demonstration.
What's important is
loving with all the heart and soul
like you and Juliet did.

9. Sailor Stars Entrance Theme from Sailor Stars: The only song to make this list that isn't an opening or ending theme song, I've always loved the simplicity of it. There's just something very catchy about the way it starts with only a few fingersnaps, then moves in with an Ocarina followed quickly by a full band led by a violin. Great song and I still snap along everytime I listen to it.

8. "Shooting Star" from World Of Narue: The reason why this song places eighth on my list is purely for the lyrics. This song does one of the best jobs I've ever heard in Anime of capturing what the pure essense of the series is actually about. In this series, you have two kids who fall in love for the first time and the lyrics of this song capture that absolutely perfectly! The tempo is fabulous as it makes you think back to those times when you were in love for the first time and the world just seemed to be flying by... your stomach had butterflies... your head was spinning... you were afraid (and yet secretly hoping) that it would never stop..... this song captures it!

Favorite Lyrics:
"The world is spinning faster and the brakes don't work
as long as I am with you I can go anywhere."

7. "Rainy Day Man" (English version) from Sailor Moon R: In the Sailor Moon R season, this song was used as a love theme near the beginning of the series (episode 43 to be exact) and even now, it's still one of my favorites. It starts with a very nice drum and keyboard part before moving in with very sweet lyrics about having someone there for you when that first love ends. Everyone needs someone to lean on when it feels like the world is raining down on you and this song will always make you think of that person.

Favorite Lyrics:
Rainy Day Man
On your shoulder I cried
When my first brush with love
Left me shaking inside
Rainy Day Man
You're much more than a friend
I would give anything
Just to see you again

6. "Clever" From El Hazard: This is one of the songs from El Hazard and the thing that I love most about it is how vivid it brings images to my mind. Everytime I listen to it, I just get this picture in my mind of myself and someone sitting down together, both feeling a little anxious about how we feel towards each other but in this instance, she's the one that decides to make the first move. Gotta love these crazy modern times! (Just kidding! Don't send me hate mail!)

Favorite Lyrics
When we met you were very shy
Then we gazed into each other's eyes
I could tell you were shocked when we fell
So much in love
Music played on a gentle breeze
There are so many memories
Of the night
When we knew it was right

5. "Pure Blue" from Chance Pop Session: This song has been a favorite of mine ever since I first heard it. It starts off with the harmony of the three girls and then moves on quickly into some of the finest J-pop I've probably ever heard (which is saying something since I am not a fan of J-pop). It is songs like this that make me wish that I spoke Japanese!

Favorite Lyrics:
Because I'm only dreaming
So my friends all laugh
If you don't believe,
then nothing can come to be
My heart tells me thats all right

4. "Freckles" (English version) from Rurouni Kenshin:: Despite how short it is (it clocks in at only 1 minute, 35 seconds), I've always loved this song because of the way it moves in from the really heavy opening guitar chords into a very poppy song that just grabs you by the shirt collar and commands you to sing along! While it is very short, it is incredibly catchy and easily one of the more popular Anime songs among fans.

Favorite Lyrics
All the memories I have are beautiful in my mind,
But they don't feed the hunger deep inside my soul.

3. "Geki! Teikoku Kageki-dan" from Sakura Wars: The first series that I ever REALLY got into was Sakura Wars. It had everything that I was looking for.... great action, a wonderful storyline, memorable characters, girls who beat the crap out of things, everything! So, it was only natural that I especially got into the opening theme which I still love to this day. Everytime I put in one of the DVDs I would never skip over the opening theme because I wanted to try and sing along and although I usually ended up mangling it something horrible, I kept at it and to this day.. this song is the only Anime song that I can sing in Japanese without screwing it up too horribly. With it's incredible full band arrangment and powerful lyrics, it came close to becoming my favorite anime song but not quite.

Favorite Lyrics:
'Run Lightning Fast, Imperial Flower Combat Troop
Roar Glorious Imperial Flower Combat Troop'

2. "Princess Nine" from Princess Nine: This is my favorite all time series. It has girls... it has baseball... it has girls playing baseball, what more could I ask for?? This was an incredibly underrated series (and I'm still peeved about a second season never being made!) that is punctuated by a wonderful opening theme played by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. I think what drives me most about this song though is the intensely driving drum beat throughout the song. Everytime I hear it, I just have to drum along with my hands on my desk!

Favorite Lyrics:
I have been dreaming of an eternal green field
Don't give up, just do it
I will find my true self there

And that brings us to number one... it wasn't a hard choice for me to make my number one pick, it was actually much harder deciding on the other nine since there were so many that I wanted to put on. But here we go, taking the number 1 spot.....

1. "Wind Nocturne" aka "Luna's Boat Song" from Lunar Silver Star: OK, I admit that technically this is cheating because Lunar Silver Star is an anime video game and not an anime series but there is no possible way that I could create this list and not put this song as number 1 simply because not only is it my favorite Anime song, but it is also my favorite song period. The lyrics in this song are by far the most moving that I have heard. They sing a message of self doubt and worry. Curiosity, fear, excitment towards your future and hope. All of those are captured within the lyrics of this song. It will be a long time before a song comes along that takes the place of this song as my favorite, many songs have attempted and there have even been a couple of contenders but in the end.... it's always "Wind Nocturne" that wins out.

Favorite Lyrics:
To be honest, I love the whole song and since it's so short (most of the song is instrumental) here is the entire song...

Wishing on a dream that seems far off
Hoping it will come today.
Into the starlit night,
Foolish dreamers turn their gaze,
Waiting on a shooting star.
But, what if that star is not to come?
Will their dreams fade to nothing?
When the horizon darkens most,
We all need to believe there is hope.
Is an angel watching closely over me?
Can there be a guiding light I've yet to see?
I know my heart should guide me, but,
There's a hole within my soul.
What will fill this emptiness inside of me?
Am I to be satisfied without knowing?
I wish, then, for a chance to see,
Now all I need, (desperately)
Is my star to come...

Well, that's it... my top ten anime songs. I'd like to thank you for humoring me and reading through this (and if you actually read through it all I congratulate you) but now it's your turn! I want to hear back from you, anime fans and non anime fans alike. Did you agree with my list? What songs would you have left off and put in their place? Inquiring minds want to know!
So anyways, thanks again and I will see you all again (hopefully) for review 150, now if you'll excuse me... making this top ten list has put me in the mood to listen to some music!

*For those of you who decided to be smart alecks and count my reviews, you'll notice that my 50th review is no longer my 50th review but that's only because I've since deleted reviews that were below par or just plain sucked.
