The Bottom Line Don't go into that good night alone babe.
A list of the best horror movies. Things that go bump in the night and other stuff to fear. Now read on.
1. Alien
In space no one can hear you scream. This bleak tale of a ship with a dangerous cargo is still terrifying. It made Sigourney Weaver a star and John Hurt's chest exploding an iconic scene. The monster designed by H.R Giger is still a unique creation. The sequels haven't hurt this original terror.
2. Bram Stoker's Dracula
Scary, stylish and not terribly faithful to the book. But the book drags badly and is out of date, so fair enough. Keanu is a wet and dull Jonathan but Gary Oldman's count can bite me. Oh you should know the story by now..Jonathan goes to Transylvania to sell a house to count D who plans an invasion of England. Mina, the fiancee of dull Jonathan is the reincarnation of the count's lost love. Splendid acting by Winona Ryder here. As her vixenish best friend Lucy Sadie Frost excels. Guess who gets bitten rapidly.
We also get Hannibal Lecter versus Drac with Antony Hopkins as a terrific Van Helsing. With Tom Waits as Renfield and Diamanda Galas on the soundtrack all bases are covered.
3. Silence of the Lambs
How much did this film scare me when i saw it first? very much.
Jodie Foster's agent gets info from the original serial killer superstar and it works well. Hopkins gave a performance of a lifetime. The sequels sucked but this remains scary.
4. Scream
It joked with the genre but still scared me. Neve Campbell plays the girl with haunted past well and the rest of the cast are splendid.
Courtney Cox's tv-presenter reeks naked ambition and it's her finest hour outside that tv-show.
5. Buffy's Hush
An episode of the show-but it's still way better than most other films. The gentlemen are coming to steal the voices of the people of Sunnydale and then their hearts. Eek. Lovely tribute to Tim Burton too.
6. Dellamorte, dellamore
Very odd zombie-movie in which Rupert Everett plays a graveyard attendant whose dead bodies keep coming back. A man romances a severed but alive head of a woman. The look of boredom on Everett's face as he offs zombies every night has to be seen to be believed. Surreal and inspired stuff.
7. Nadja
Very nice film of Dracula's daughter played by the lovely Elina Löwensohn. She's from Transylvania in real life. The film also features the brilliant and ever-handsome Martin Donovan and a great soundtrack. Produced by David Lynch.
8. Blue Velvet
The always-scary Dennis Hopper gives it his all as the demented Frank who preys on nightclub singer Isabella Rossellini. Innocent
Kyle Mclachan watches aghast in the closet. Soon he's drawn into a mess of horror as he tries to help her.
9. The Others
Nicole Kidman is brilliant as the woman in a haunted house. She is living there with her kids waiting for her husband to return from the war. Soon mysterious things start happening. Suspenseful and subtle. It gave me such a bad fright my heart nearly broke my chest.
10. The ring
Silly story of a video-tape that kills those who watches but it's still frightening. A plucky female reporter goes in search of a cure after watching the tape by mistake. Tick tick..soon her time will be up. The Japanese original is the best version but the remake is cool too. The two differ on various odd points. The American remake with Naomi Watts has a thing about horses that the original doesn't have. Still don't know what's up with that.
