Fantastic Voyage (Reply to this comment)
by jammiwam
A glaring omission on this list is the 1966 sci-fi classic FANTASTIC VOYAGE. Not only did it have a very interesting story and the coolest submarine design ever (by non-other than Nautilus designer Harper Goff), it had Raquel Welsh in a skin tight wetsuit! I've loved this film ever since I firt saw it in '66 at the age of 7.

I've seen all the films you mentioned but you left one off the list worth seeing: Grey Lady Down.

Quotes Make It Special (Reply to this comment)

I liked your use of quotes from some of these films. I regard your Sean Connery quote from Hunt for Red October as an especially appropriate example of his character in the film.

I agree COMPLETELY with your list above.
BZ (as they say in the Navy). That's short for BRAVO ZULU, navyspeak for WELL DONE!

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (Reply to this comment)

I didn't see the American movie, but I saw the Russian version as a child and read the book. I enjoyed them very much, but there was something that bothered me about both. Captain Nemo's submarine is described as a slender, agile thing that can move around the most treacherous waters and squeeze through tight passages (e.g. the narrow tunnel beneath the isthmus of Suez). However, judging from the descriptions of the interior (spacious bridge and dining room with lavish furnishings impervious to condensation, library with similarly condensation-proof books, labs, and cabins where people can lounge and stand up straight, not to mention the secret compartments and many other bells and whistles), Nemo's sub should be about the size of a Carnival cruise ship. I later read that the critics really took Jules Verne to task for that.

ratings and more (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, in Movies
I thought I had rated it...
Now I've seen and reviewed "Destination Tokyo" at www.epinions.com/content_150516305540
that also lists some WWI submarine movies.
Also, the other great comedy about a submarine crew (albeit from one that has run aground so that the captain is coping with some hysterical American civilians rather than the military that has not noticed the invasion) is "The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!"

Well I like comedies and submarine films so I'll get Operation Petticoat for sure. I was hoping you'd rate this review Steve? ;)
Take care...

Hello George, Yeah, I had a hard time trying to rank these ten movies. I probably could have ranked the ten movies backwards, and it would have made just as much sense. RS-RD was an excellent movie! Hey, thanks for stopping by.

"Operation Petticoat" is a comedy with Grant and Tony Curtis and a bunch of stranded nurses. "Destination Tokyo" has arrived since my comment. If I like it, I'll review it. (Not much danger of my seeing "Gerry".)
Having seen (again) both "Run Silent" and "The Enemy Within" over the course of the last two years, I am in accord with your ranking "Enemy" higher, though it's only half a submarine movie. Some day I'll get around to seeing the director's (un)cut of "Das Boot." Until then, your ranking looks sound to me.
There are movie or book reviews you've posted and I've missed? You're on my alerts list.

The list is good but RS, RD belongs in #`1 position, imho. Das Boot good, but no charisma like Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. I need to see Torpedo Run again. Enemy Below is not in same class as RS/RD or Das Boot. Bedford Incident also a damn fine sub hunt. Not a critique - I'd hate to come up wiht my own list but RS,RD is the top for me! ;->

Oh, man... Sorry Stephen! I can honestly say that I have never seen the movie, Operation Petticoat. It sure sounds like I should. You and I are usually fairly close on our movies likes and dislikes. Well, until your review of Gerry anyway:-) Then I leave out your favorite submarine movie in my top ten submarine list. It's no wonder you've quit rating my reviews! Just funnin you Steve. I'll go rent Operation Petticoat thought. Thanks for stopping by.

I guess most folks didn't care too much for K-19 or U-571 but I sure enjoyed both of them. Thanks for stopping by Jack.

No Cary Grant? (Reply to this comment)

My favorite submarine movie is "Operation Petticoat." His serious wartime submarine commander role in "Operation Tokyo" I haven't seen, but it is headed my way (by land).
