| horseman_2's Full Review: Minutes To Midnight (Mvi) [Edited] by Linkin Park |
In late April, I heard about the new CD Minutes To Midnight. I am a huge Linkin Park fan, so I quickly got some money together and headed to the store. Once I had the CD in my hot little hands I headed home to give it a listen - I was excited! I put it in the player and got a huge surprise. Not a good surprise, like getting the last donut out of the box. This was a bad surprise, like your little brother slipping an ice cube down your pants while you're sleeping.
Since LP is a heavy metal band I expect all metal all the time with the occasional techno track on their CD. Instead, they put pop music on this CD. Now if you're a metal fan this is a huge insult and you may not want to buy this CD. To be fair, there are some very catchy songs like Leave Out All The Rest or Shadow Of The Day. Both are very catchy but not even close to the genre that Linkin Park claims to be. Still, these are very nice. This CD is nothing like their old stuff -it's a completely new sound and frankly not a very good one.
There is some swearing on some tracks which wasn't needed and some political protests which are just boring and honestly, just rehashing of songs by other bands. Midnight is a very mixed bag. Some of it is increasingly depressing like the song Valentine's Day. In addition to political protests there are songs of redemption and songs of self hate.
Here is the list of the songs included on this CD:
1 Wake
2 Given Up
3 Leave Out All The Rest
4 Bleed It Out
5 Shadow Of The Day
6 What I've Done
7 Hands Held High
8 No More Sorrow
9 Valentine's Day
10 In Between
11 In Pieces
12 The Little Things That Give You Away
I feel that only a few of these songs deserve special comments, but here are the ones which I feel most strongly about:
2. Given Up - I didn't like it at all. It had this cheesy air of self-loathing and self-centered whining. Most of their other songs are about rebellion and about wanting to be heard, but this one just sounded too much like something the band Korn would do.
3. Leave Out All The Rest was better. This song is something new and refreshing for a change. It is a completely different sound for the band. It focuses on wanting to be forgiven, something I guess everyone can relate to. There are some good vocals on this track, but nothing special about the drumming.
4. Bleed It Out Again, very cheesy. This song has the same message as some of their past songs but with a worse sound. There is a new guitar sound I'm not crazy about. I don't think I've heard anything like this from the guitarist. There is a lot of singing from Mike Shnoda, who usually does back up singing and rap. I think on future albums, he should go back to being in the background.
5. Shadow Of The Day This is kind of nice, I liked it. It's good not to hear Chester screaming for a change. His voice is actually pretty good when it's not screaming. This one has a good bass line, you can actually hear it in the begining which is an interesting sound. Interesting music and good singing make this one of the better songs on this album.
6. What I've Done This one I really enjoyed, because it sounded really good and once again no screaming. This is a song about redemption and is very optimistic. It makes you think more than the other songs on the album, although LP isn't known for their deep messages. This song was played in the Transformers movie, but I didn't think it suited the movie at all. Still, this is my favourite song from this album.
9. Valentine's Day This song is really depressing. It's something you would listen to if you had just been dumped if you wanted to wallow in self-pity. I'd rather watch the MTV awards - and I hate MTV! The song starts off kind of slow and then gets a lot faster towards the end with better drumming. However, even the best drumming can't fix a song with such depressing and vapid lyrics. All in all a very whiny and annoying song.
Overall there isn't much to catch your imagination on this CD. The music isn't as good as on their other albums and some of the songs are just plain annoying. Bottom line, if you like pop you might like some of there songs although it's doubtful. If you like heavy metal you will like maybe one song which is more of a Korn sound then anything else. This album is definitely not for anyone under the age of 14 because of the swearing. There isn't a lot but when they do it's pretty bad. To me, this made the album sound silly not edgy. It seemed like they knew this would be a bad CD and so threw in some swearing to try and make it more interesting, but that failed, in my opinion. This CD was a disappointment and a big waste of my allowance.
