The website is great, easy to navigate and use and has all the information for any question you might have.
My sister and I (in our early 60s) took Amtrak from Birmingham, Alabama to Philadelphia, PA to see the King Tut exhibit before it left the states and do a little historical sightseeing. We left around 3 PM on a Sunday and pulled into Philly about noon the next day. Our train was virtually a straight shot, no changing trains. Tickets for us with the senior discount were around $750, round trip for us both. We stayed at the Sheraton Society Hill for 3 days (nice hotel!) before our return.
We had the little 4X7 "roomette" which has two very comfortable chairs that make into bunks at night, a small toilet, sink, controlled A/C and nice lighting. We had a large picture window, both on the bottom and one for the top bunk when it was occupied. Meals were included in our tickets and the food in the dining car was, for the most part, very good: a varied menu and nice attendants and servers. We found all the Amtrak employees, on both trains on the round-trip, very friendly and helpful.
My sister and I found the trip relaxing and very pleasant, actually a far more pleasant experience than flying and the terrible hustle and bussle and restrictions that accompany airline travel these days.
I will mention that, from reports online from travelers on Amtrak and people we know, there is a very big difference traveling all the way in a seat and traveling in either a roomette or a "bedroom" (much larger and expensive). I honestly don't know if I'd travel Amtrak in a seat, except for a short trip. I think our very positive experience had a lot to do with our private, relatively quiet roomette accomodations and would recommend this for two people.
We had a wonderful time on Amtrak and we plan another trip next year.
