New and Improved! Napster Will Dominate The Future

The Bottom Line Napster will be successful as they continue to work with the music industry.

I'm almost positive that this is an outdated topic that was brought about a long, long time ago, when Napster was at the front of the illegal music sharing tidal wave. However, I feel that it is appropriate for this topic to resurface seeing as Napster is working on making a comback, as a legal place for people to download and listen to songs. That being said, I will use this epinion to state my comments and thoughts on what the future holds for Napster and whether or not it stands a chance against the current software dominating the industry, iTunes.

While Napster was once the focus of negative media because of various lawsuits, the company is currently pulling a 180 and turning everything around. With the idea of legal downloading (i.e. paying per song per download) becoming more popular, Napster has jumped on the bandwagon as the second most popular program to use. Behind iTunes, Napster is gaining market share fast for various reasons.

Product Differentiation - While Napster offers the same service that other programs offer, purchasing songs to download and store on your harddrive, they have set themselves apart from everyone else through the option of unlimited streaming for a monthly fee. The advantage? Revenue for Napster and no hard drive space taken up for the user.

Important Partnerships - Next time you walk into your local Best Buy, take a look around for a Napster Gift Card. Chances are, you'll find one fairly easily. That's because Napster has saturated the market with physical gift cards, while competitors such as iTunes have relied on gift certificates ordered online. With the unlimited streaming option as well, Napster has started many strategic alliances with various colleges and universities (Georgetown not being one of them... sonofa...) to give students the option to stream for free (i.e. the college has paid a lump sum). This means that the universities do not have to worry as much about students illegally sharing and downloading songs on their networks, and it means that Napster will have a large lump sum, as well as students potentially purchasing songs (the universities do not cover this).

With Napster resurfacing and striking strategic alliances, I think that we are going to see Napster grab hold of a large portion of the market share within the legal downloads sector, and they are going to be able to dominate the unlimited streaming sector with the alliances they have already formed. I think that Napster will definitely be successful in the future, despite what the past holds for the company.
