Never in my widest dreams did I ever think this would happen to me.
I HAVE BECOME A BAG LADY!!!
LOL Okay, hold on a sec. Dont let your heart palpitate too wildly. Let me explain.
I put off writing this review until I used this product a few times. The last thing I wanted to do was either give you wondrous raves or disillusioned rants. Now, I can write a review that I know will make your mouth water.
Ive used the new GLAD® SIMPLY COOKING MICROWAVE STEAMING BAGS several times now and all I can do is give you wondrous raves!
Normally, between fishing, the clubs of which I am a member, writing, etc - my life is way too busy to bother with cooking fresh vegetables. I usually opt for the canned. Just open the lid, toss them into a saucepan, heat and youre done. But, all too often, the taste is just lacking that special oomph!
When I received my sample pack of these microwave steaming bags, I purchased a few bags of frozen veggies as my experiment. GOODBYE CANS!!
My first test was broccoli. I put three cups of these great green veggie in the bag, sealed the bag and tossed in the microwave, following the directions explicitly. Holy Cow! I cannot explain how absolutely awesome the broccoli tasted after it was cooked.
First of all, yes, you can use either frozen or fresh vegetables.
These bags are designed to you can cook anywhere from one to four servings of whatever veggie to choose to make. It will steam carrots, corn, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, potatoes - well, you name the vegetable and Im sure you can cook it in the bag.
These bags are so easy to use.
First, if youre using fresh veggies, wash them before steaming.
Second, place either your fresh or frozen veggies in the bag. Be sure to use the guide as to the quantity you can fit in each bag.
Third, DO NOT add water. These bags are designed to cook the veggies in their own natural juices for a better and more natural taste.
Fourth, seal the bag using the pinch guides that are on the bag.
Fifth, toss the bag in the microwave and set it as indicated on the bag. For instance, 10-12 spears of asparagus should cook for 3-4 minutes if fresh and 4-5 minute if frozen.
Since these bags are creating natural steam, BE CAREFUL when opening the bag as the steam will escape. This hot moisture could burn your hands it you do not take the proper precautions.
Finally, SIT BACK AND ENJOY!!
Although I have not tried this, I also wouldnt advise it. I have not tried and dont advise cooking two different vegetables in the same bag. Maybe its just me but I doubt the steam would cook them properly and the flavors might crossover to each other causing the each veggie to taste a bit weird. As I said, havent tried it and dont intend to.
I can honestly say, using these bags has made cooking a whole lot easier for me.
First there is NO pot to clean. No Corningware dish to wash. I just spoon the cooked veggie right from the bag to the plate. (Of course, if I was having company, then Id pour the cooked veggie into my decorative Corningware for serving.)
The veggies cook quickly. Not like the 20 minutes it took to steam them on the cooktop.
Yesterday, I wanted to try a new recipe. Chicken Piccata. It sounded so good but the sauce needed constant stirring. The last thing I needed to was worry about the vegetable I wanted to make with it.
I placed the frozen veggie in the bag while the chicken cooked and placed the bag in the microwave
- but I didnt turn the appliance on. After the chicken cooked, I began stirring the sauce. I took a few seconds to turn the microwave on and since the veggie of my choice was to take only five minutes, I knew both the chicken and the veggies would be done at the same time - a feat I have never been able to successfully accomplish until now!
Im telling you . . . ya gotta try these bags!
Im SO happy that I received my sample pack and I want to thank Fleishman-Hillard for sending them to me free in exchange for my unbiased review.
As I said . . GOODBYE CANS, HELLO FROZEN! - with the help of my new GLAD® SIMPLY COOKING MICROWAVE STEAMING BAGS.
U P D A T E
You just have to love updates!!
I just steamed a hot dog! WOW... am I impressed. It was hot and juicy and perfect!
Next I'm going to try the beef stroganoff recipe that came with the bags.
Move over Rachel . . . there's a new kid in town and she's packin' bags! LOL
