My Top 100 Most Favorite Video Games Of All Time

Aug 10 '04 (Updated Dec 09 '07)

The Bottom Line No bottom line needed.

This is a list of my top 100 favorite video games of all time. Keep in mind these are my favorites, not the ones I would score high in a review. You also might notice that many games might be missing. Either I didn't play them yet; they didn't have the appeal that these did, or I haven't played them long enough to really be able to crack this list.

100. Transformers

It's the Transformers game I've been waiting for. Too bad it's 15 years late and the storyline has significantly changed.

99. Wordtris

I really can't explain this one, but if I want to kill an hour or two, this is a sure fire way of doing it.

98. Life Force

This was one of my more favorite Nintendo coop games. It definitely helped pass the time in the winter.

97. Marvel vs. Capcom 2

Would probably be ranked higher if I could find someone to play this with.

96. ESPN College Hoops 2K5

Still the only basketball game that I have played that features the Palestra.

95. Touchdown Football

It taught me the rules for football. I am forever in its debt.

94. Skate or Die II

This was the closest I got to a skateboard. It was fun nonetheless.

93. The Chessmaster

For when I had to play chess when no one around me knows the game.

92. Duke Nukem 3D

I'm glad I had this game during my early teenage years.

91. Tetris

Everyone knows how addictive this game is and why.

90. Mike Tyson's Punchout

I'm not a huge fan of boxing, but this game was really fun to play. Nothing like bashing in the face of Glass Joe.

89. Super Mario Brothers 2

This is higher up on many people's lists. It just didn't have the longevity of other Nintendo games.

88. DND

A freeware game that had horrible ASCII graphics. It's a good thing that it taught me how to create my own dungeon maps.

87. Vampyr

One of the first roleplaying games I played. It was really buggy as I later found out though. It was a good thing it was freeware.

86. Tecmo Bowl (GB)

It's not great, but it was a portable Tecmo Bowl. Thus it received a lot of attention from me.

85. Baseball (GB)

This was a simple but very fun baseball game. Too bad those fielders are still chasing down that shot to the gap.

84. Final Fantasy Legend II

A better game than Final Fantasy Legend. I just jumped on the boat way too late.

83. Madden NFL 2005

While I still like Madden NFL 2004 better, this Madden is still a pretty good game in my book.

82. Castlevania II

I should have spent more time playing this game. I really liked the premise behind it.

81. Ultima Exodus

There's something about 3D dungeons that appeal to me. This game was surprisingly enjoyable.

80. Sim City

This is an incredible game that deserves more attention. To bad I had already graduated to Sim City 2000 before I exhausted the gameplay out of this game.

79. Bill Walsh College Football

The game wasn't great, but it had Bo Jackson, Doug Flutie, and many other classic college football heroes. If only for that reason it took up a decent amount of time in my Genesis.

78. Super Mario Brothers

I didn't play this game as much as most other people. But I do go back to it every once in a while, if only for my wife to get her Super Mario Brothers fix.

77. Grand Theft Auto (PC)

This game would have been much more fun if it wasn't for the fact that you had a limited number of lives.

76. Ikaruga

The toughest game I have ever played, hands down.

75. Katamari Damacy

I understand why many people think this game is fun, but I just didn't get the humor as much as other people.

74. Sim Ant

This is really a shallow game. However, I was amazed at how many hours I spent playing it. This does not reflect well upon me.

73. Worms

This was the college version of Scorched Earth. Too bad we were too caught up in Shadow Warrior and Half Life.

72. Tie Fighter Vs X-Wing

I took great pride in mastering this game. However my interest level never peaked above Tie Fighter.

71. Wolfenstein 3D

Shooting Nazis in a 3D rendered world? Was there anything better for a preteen?

70. Crystalis

A vastly underrated Nintendo game. It could have been a Zelda killer if more people knew about it.

69. SOCOM II: US Navy Seals

Video game night is now dubbed "SOCOM Night."

68. Final Fantasy Legend

This was my first portable RPG. While it wasn't the greatest game out there, it was halfway decent. I got a lot of mileage out of it.

67. Basewars

Could have been much better, but this game was extremely addicting. That and the music gets stuck in my head every so often.

66. Zelda Link's Awakening

I was surprised how good this Zelda game was. Even better considering it's on a portable system.

65. Baseball Stars

An incredibly fun baseball game.

64. X-Wing Alliance

What X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter should have been.

63. Batman

The best movie-based game I have ever played. It's short, but it's really fun.

62. MLB 2006

A ton of fun in career mode. Too bad the wait times were so long.

61. FPS Football

Another football game were I simulated through decades of seasons.

60. Deadlock

"Tarth say you lose. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del."

59. Doom

I got way too much mileage out of this free game.

58. Final Fantasy Legend III

The best out of all 3 Final Fantasy Legend games.

57. Sid Meier's Pirates!

My wife hated this game because I used to stop the final ballroom dancing cutscene with a nice cleavage shot.

56. Halo 2

I didn't enjoy this as much as most other people, but it is a pretty memorable game in my book.

55. MVP Baseball 2004

Despite its bugs, it still is the most enjoyable baseball games I have played.

54. Scorched Earth

Let me set the scene. It's my 18th birthday, the same day the Packers are playing the Patriots in the Super Bowl. My friends and I end up missing the halftime show and the 3rd quarter because of this game. Even with small bets attached to the outcome. Other than that, it's an inferior game to Worms.

53. Sky Shark

The most addictive arcade game this side of Double Dragon.

52. NBA Live 96

The first NBA game where Jerome Allen could play next to Michael Jordan.

51. Castlevania III

If developers were left to create games on the NES today, I still don't think they could have composed better music.

50. Monopoly (GB)

The best portable game this side of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. It satisfies my Monopoly fix in a flash.

49. ChuChu Rocket

The most fun puzzle game I've ever played.

48. Mega Man 2

I liked the enemies and weaponry more in this game. You were just too limited with Mega Man's abilities.

47. World Series Baseball

Real players, real teams, real stadiums. The 1993 Philadelphia Phillies ... for real?

46. Diablo II

I came just short of getting pulled in to the point of obsession. I instead opted to waste my money on Magic cards.

45. Sim City 2000

I get this music stuck in my head at least a couple times per month. That and I could watch someone play this game for hours.

44. Mega Man 3

My most favorite of all the Mega Mans. It's where his moves were able to match the challenge.

43. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic

My current obsession. It seems to be only getting better too. Look for this one to rise.

42. Dungeons of Moria

Not as deep as Angband, but I've logged more hours on this game.

41. Ninja Gaiden

Did somebody say Ninjas?

40. Zelda A Link to the Past

The best of all the Zeldas, yet it manages to come in second to the original.

39. Mario Kart

If it wasn't for Mario Kart 64, it would still be our #1 party game.

38. Half Life

Another up all night college game. I guess I couldn't get enough of that cross bow goodness.

37.Chrono Trigger

The pinnacle of open ended RPGs.

36. MLB Power Pros

Who would have thought bobble-head baseball would be so fun and so deep.

35. Double Dragon

Still the best beatem up around.

24. Contra

The best coop game on the NES. But it was also a sweet single player game as well.

33. Super Mario World

The best side-scrolling Mario Brothers game.

32. NCAA Football 06

Does it get any better than football, marching bands, and ground shaking crowd noise?

31. ESPN NHL Hockey

The most complete hockey game to date. I expect ESPN NHL 2K5 to surpass this slot.

30. Legend of Zelda

I had a weird tradition of playing this game on snowy days. In fact I still do.

29. Madden 2004

I liked this game better than Madden 2005 because it didn't use cheesy tactics.

28. SOCOM 3

Once my friends and I started playing SOCOM 3, there was no going back to any other version.

27. Links 2004

The most fun I've ever had on a golf course ... and I don't like golf.

26. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

This game embodies my core interests in roleplaying games. I have a hard time putting it down. Worth the cost of a GBA alone.

25. Clubhouse Games

Who would think such a tiny cartridge could contain so many addicting games?

24. Advance Wars 2

Finally a game that captured the gameplay of many great PC freeware games from my past that I have long forgotten. It has that old school feel to it.

23. Angband

A very fun and very deep RPG. It's also free, it just has nothing in the way of graphics. I have spent countless hours playing this game.

22. Super Mario Brothers 3

The best Nintendo game, with the exception of Tecmo Super Bowl.

21. Warcraft II

A very addicting RTS game. It also opened my eyes to the world of online gaming.

20. ESPN NFL 2K5

The best gameplay balance out of any football game I have ever played. No cheating CPU AI here.

19. Street Fighter II Champion Edition

A fantastic game that captured my interest at the right time. This is one of the only games that can bring out violent anger in my friends. That and it's not a bad single player game to boot!

18. Shadow Warrior

This is one of the only games that has spanned two different groups of friends. Also I spent more all nighters on this game than all nighters for work in college. "Look, you have a new friend!"

17. Mario Kart 64

The party game when I get together with my friends. This game has generated a ton of inside jokes.

16. Front Page Sports Football Pro '96

By far the buggiest game in my top 10. However you can't ignore the fact that this is the only game I created a playbook with 150 plays and simulated 137 seasons. It has to be the most time I have ever spent on a single game.

15. Tie Fighter

I still can't explain why this is ranked so high. It was simply the most enjoyable flight sim I have ever played. Too many times I freak out my wife when I say, "Primary Mission Objective Completed." when running errands.

14. ESPN NHL 2K5

The most complete hockey game I have played since the mid-90's. This would rank higher if only I had the chance to play this with more friends.

13. ESPN NFL Football

Like ESPN NFL 2K5 with less visuals but more realistic gameplay. One of the best football games of all time.

12. MVP Baseball 2005

Perhaps the last in the series, but it's the most fun I've had with a baseball game. Not perfect though.

11. Grand Theft Auto Vice City

The first words out of my mouth after I saw this game were, "This is the game I was dreaming about for so many years."

10. Final Fantasy I

I still play it today. I have beaten this game the most out of all the games that take me more than 10 hours to complete.

9. Final Fantasy IV

Not the most played roleplaying game of my time, but easily the most enjoyable. I usually don't appreciate good RPG stories, but this one was so good I couldn't ignore it.

8. Pokemon Emerald

The game that got me into the Pokemon craze ... 8 years later.

7. Pokemon Diamond

The last time I checked I had logged 220 hours on the game.

6. The Elder Scrolls Oblivion

Less than a week after I sold this game, I lost my Xbox 360 to a Red Ring of Death. Coincidence?

5. Starcraft

The only game of its era that had any shot of pulling me away from Warcraft II.

4. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Rarely do sequels live up to their predecessor. This is one very notable exception.

3. NHL '94

Better than NHLPA 93 in many ways. Would be higher if they didn't abolish blood or fighting.

2. NHLPA 93

The only reason I have it over NHL 94 is because it taught me the game of hockey. Simply one of the most addicting game I have ever played.

1. Tecmo Super Bowl

It's a football game I still play even to this day. In my mind Bo Jackson, QB Eagles, and David Fulcher have more character than Mario, Link, or Cid combined.
