Holy crap. (Reply to this comment)

I don't know if I've even played 100 videogames; and if I have, I seriously doubt I could name more than 30 or 40 without looking at a list.
There's not much point in rating this...there's nothing to rate!

You're like the only person I know who's played SSB and didn't like it. It must not be perfect!
Actually, I think if you've played enough games to write a Top 100 games list, you've played a ton.

Actually I don't have a ton of games played under my belt. I tend to stick with one or two for months. I never really got into the Sonic games, and I never played Rayman. I played Super Smash Bros. Melee one night with a group of friends, but we weren't particularly enamored by it. Besides, I didn't have the N64, one of my friends did.

forgotten games (Reply to this comment)
by beekd91
You play all these Genesis games and no Sonic the Hedgehog 2???????? That was the best Sega game EVER!!
Where's Super Mario Bros. 3??? That was wild!
No Rayman? No Super Smash Bros.? SSB is the flat-out best multiplayer game of all time!
Oh well. It's all opinions. And you've probably played an exponentially higher amount of video games than me. But please, where's SSB??

Great List!!! (Reply to this comment)
by alaskanway91
Do you think someone will step up and make all of the previous Tecmo's for all systems under one title? I realize that would probably be a license nightmare, but wouldn't that be great?

Fabuloso list!
I've always loved Zelda II, and Final Fantasy II was the one that got me started on that whole series. Arkanoid, I pined endlessly for that game at one point. Castlevania II truly addictive, even though it kinda blew that the flame whip wasn't twice as powerful as the Morning Star. I think the damage scale went 1, 2, 4, 8, and then 15, but in a way that did provide some extra challenge. Castlevania III was also insanely addicting. Chrono Trigger, absolutely spectacular game that was.
To this day, I have never played Tecmo Super Bowl but I've heard nothing but great things about it.

I've been playing games every year since I started in the Atari days...so, there's obviously going to be a lot to sort through. I have a good idea as to what I'd rank up at the top. It's building down to the bottom that's got me worried.
I actually played many of the Zelda games, but most of which for not very long. The first game I owned on NES, and I actually never got maybe 10-15 minutes into it because it was so hard to play back then. I own the game now on the GameCube's promo disk, but haven't really gotten into it too much. The Mega Man series I liked back in the day, but even that wouldn't be at the very top of the list (it wasn't one of my most favorite series). Though, I don't know how I could forget to hold back the good games...as this would be a list of my 100 all-time favorite games.

It matters how many games you've played. I didn't do that because I could barely post a top 200 games ranking and that's if I remember all the obscure shareware titles I played as a kid. The majority of games I played were pre-high school and post-college. I think I only had a 10 game rotation for those 8 years in HS and college (almost 1/3 of my life).
Two things to watch out for however you decide to do it. One, make sure you have a system that doesn't leave good games behind. I had a clumping habit where I would grab a bunch of sports games and/or series games (mega man, zelda, etc ...) all in one ranking area simply because they were there. In the process I almost forgot about Sim City 2000 and had to fit it in.
Second, don't do this all in one sitting. For me, my rankings changed slightly from day to day. What I have now is the best average of my daily mood swings.

Hmm...that sounds kind of confusing. I was thinking of maybe going through a site that has every game listed, and then pick out the games from that list I've played, think of which ones I like better than the others, and then put the list together that way. Do you think that's a good way to do it?

Re: Chrono Trigger... (Reply to this comment)
by kjell1979, in Games
Yeah, ChronoCross was one of the many games I have yet to play. I'm surprised that no one has noticed that I don't have many Final Fantasy games either. I've been told numerous times I should try FFV and FFVI.
This is how I compiled this list:
- First think of all the games you have ever played. It took me a couple sittings to do this because it's just too hard to think of them all.
- Next I try and sort through the list. You can come up with your own assortment. I had a NES section, a sports games section, an RPG section, a PC section, and some other small misc sections as well. I would suggest that you should either sort by genre or platform. The former makes it a little easier from my experience.
- Next, try to group them in tens by ranking. For instance group the 10 games that you know are in your top 10 but don't rank them yet. Do the same with 11-20, etc ...
- Next I go through each group of ten and rank those. What was convenient for me was I forgot some games along the way and I was ranking a group of 12-13 and passing the 2-3 that didn't make the cut to the next grouping.
I hope that helps. If you have any more questions, we can take this offline through email or something.

Re: Great Job (Reply to this comment)

I qualified that response. I said the worst console RPG. I've played much worse. There are quite a few on the PC that put the original DW to shame in terms of suckitude.
Yeah, I liked GTA:VC much much more than I should have. It just struck me as an extremely fun game.

Chrono Trigger... (Reply to this comment)

I noticed Chrono Trigger was on your list, but not Chrono Cross? If you haven't checked that one out, you should. It's a very worthy sequel.
By the way...your list has got me interested in coming up with my own 100. I'm not exactly sure how to go about that, though. How did you compile your list?

but I still can't believe you thought of Dragon Warrior as being one of the worst RPGs you've played ;)
I was a bit surprised to see the high placement of Grand Theft Auto Vice City.

If I made a list of my top 100, it'd look a lot like this. I especially like Tecmo Bowl at the top, followed closely by NHL '93.
Great review !

I had RBI Baseball, Hardball, and Ice Hockey in my cut list. Again, it those probably would have made my top 120, but I just couldn't add them to my top 100.

Ultima II would have been in my top 110, maybe my top 120. It just missed the cut.
I liked the one for Nintendo the best. Although it would have made a better PC game.

I pumped in enough quarters in Sky Shark to buy an Xbox. Then again it was also the best arcade game at the local drug store for a year.

I'd add the original R.B.I. Baseball and Ice Hockey for NES as well.
Any list that has Tecmo Super Bowl at #1 is a great list. Good work.

Power to the old school gamers!
I can't believe you left off Ultima II.
Silent Service was a great game. Back in my Apple IIgs days, I logged many hours playing the original D&D game Pool of Radiance.
