Works great if you're lucky enough to get a functional one
Written: Sep 30 '07 (Updated Nov 06 '07)
Pros:Compact, convenient, works great when functioning
Cons:Some units don't always work as it should, often fails.
The Bottom Line: Would love to recommend this since the units that work do work quite well, but too many of the units are faulty
As IT Manager of a small company, a few months ago I bought two of these, one for our main company salesman, the other for our company owner/president. They found it to be a very useful and compact/portable device while giving presentations. The remote wireless mouse pointer function is very convenient. And the "Power Point" remote presenter is quite useful too; making it very easy to go back and forth between both screens and builds within a screen. And the laser pointer is a huge bonus. Finally, the small leathery case that comes with it not only fits the device perfectly, but even has a side pocket that snugly fits the USB dongle that the device works off of.
Well, one of our now clients loved the device so much during the sales presentation we gave him back then that we decided to order one for him as a courtesy. We were sad to learn that Microsoft discontinued it, but I found that a few vendors still had some in stock. But now I know why.
I went to a local Office Depot and bought a device. The USB dongle (and thus the functionality of the device it self) would only be recognized in about half the computers I tried it in, and it about half of those it only worked intermittently, even though those computers all fully recognized the dongle.
So not chancing that it wouldn't function with our client we returned it for a refund and ordered one through B&H Photo. This one didn't work at all in any computer! So we gave up on buying one of these.
It's too bad Microsoft didn't take the time to work the kinks out of this one, because when it does work it is really a great tool for making presenting easy and convenient!
