The Bottom Line The Bottom Line needs to get me some coffee.
I'm somewhat fruit-looped at the minute, I have a gazillion and 25.346 W/Os I've promised to enter, so I thought I'd start off with this one, since one of the others seems to be occupying my every waking hour trying to come up with ideas. I pondered over the blighter for about 5 hours last night and I'm still clueless. Anyway, here's my entry into Linda's Remembering What You Did at 17 W/O, which was a nice jaunt down memory lane, if only for the talking wallpaper. 1. Who were your best friends, or were you a friendless geek? What was the most interesting fun that you had together? There were a few of us that used to hang out together at that time, a mixture of boys and girls, a mixture of indie kids and goths, and most notably, a mixture of people prone to dating each other on some sort of quarterly rotation. We were pretty weird as a group, or at least, others thought so, but that might have had something to do with Kai and her penchant for dressing like Robert Smith. Or Robin, who thought it highly appropriate to attend gigs in floral printed dresses and doc martin boots (Robin was a boy). That aside, we did have fun, especially at various music festivals in Europe that summer. I'll never forget David Gabeler hanging out of his tent at 4 in the morning, completely off his face, quoting lines from "Full Metal Jacket". 2. What was your favorite food? Have you out grown your fondness for it? Was this food involved in a food fight? Oh God, I used to have salad cream with everything (except dessert) I could have a plate of the finest gourmet in front of me, but still feel the need to drench it in the stuff, which on reflection, is rather gross. 3. Did you have a pet- real or imaginary? Were you the teacher's pet. Maybe you were the animal- fess up! I had a cat called Frank. Frank was superb, he knew exactly what time I was due home everyday and always managed to make it to the top of the street before I turned the corner. The poor bugger carked at the top of the stairs one night a few years later. When he was buried, I had the words "Our Frank" put on his stone, in honour of Morrissey.... Teacher's pet? My French teacher loved me, for some inexplicable reason, as did my English teacher, but that's only because she thought it hilarious when I tried to read Shakespeare aloud in my stupid German accent. She scarred me for life, that b!tch. Having said that, the Swedish accent I have now is just plain hilarious, I seldom speak, except to other Swedes, and the occasional Dane. 4. What was your most memorable, life changing moment- in school or out. Did it involve any psychedelics? Various things happened when I was 17. Firstly, my Mother died, and being somewhat estranged from my father at that time I was left to live on my own. I suppose I was quite sensible and managed adequately, I had a couple of jobs I did a few evenings after school and at weekends.. The government were also nice and gave me enough money each week to buy a pint of milk (2 at Christmas). But it was an experience that made me grow up rather quickly, it wasn't until I went to University the following year that I resorted back to adolescent behaviour. As for psychedelics, that didn't come until Uni, and involved being chased by a mars bar on my bike down a canal (and subsequently into said canal). And also, one very strange evening when whilst sat in an armchair, the wallpaper pattern turned into Tsar Nicholas II and King George V (who looked very similar) and started quoting WWI casualty statistics at me. 5. Were you still a virgin at 17? Are you still? No & No And that's all I'm saying. LOL 6. What was the most wicked thing you did? Did anyone find out? Were you grounded or just thrown in jail? Hmmm, I don't recall doing anything wicked, I was sickeningly nice. 7. How many guys or girls did you date when you were 17? Do you still keep in touch with them? Is your current mate jealous? Date? 2. Kiss and/or other acts of lust? Too bloody many. The last one I saw was Lucy, who I dated for 3 months when I was 17, and that was in about 1995. I had a bath once with Lucy, you know. Saucy. 8. What was your favorite subject in school? Or are you a high school drop out? Did you get to skip a grade because you are a genius? I loved English Literature, and History. I suppose I did pretty well in school, I wasn't a slacker. The words Smart and Ärse, spring to mind. 9. What was the make and the condition of the car you drove. Were you guilty of any traffic violations or worse? Were you randy? I didn't get my first car until I was 18, but at 17, I do recall some interesting behaviour on the back seat of someone else's car. 10. Did you know what you wanted to do with your life? Did you aspire to be a beauty queen, fireman or a Dentist? Or just be plain old brilliant and discover... Then, I wanted to be in the music industry in some form or other. The 2 jobs until I finished university were both music orientated. I worked for a time in a record library at a radio station, before shifting to help out one of the presenters on his show. And I also worked in a small recording studio called Moonraker, helping out the engineer and invoicing clients and other bits and pieces. When I moved to London for a couple of years, I changed my mind and wanted to do teach Russian and Eastern European Social and Political History, which was my minor, but instead, I wound up working in IT. Computers are good. But they can't make a decent cup of Löfbergs Lila. 11. Where did you live? The city, rural America, suburbia, out of this country... or in your own private, little world? In a tiny village in the middle of bloody nowhere. 12. Sisters and brothers are, were, still are..... How many? Were you an only child? Do you wish you were an only child? Did you see to it that you were? Only child. We've been through the whole midwife slapping mother escapade. 13. Did you get into the college of your choice? Were you college bound? Did you end up with a great job flipping burgers? Are you famous now because of the choice you made then? I ended up going to Manchester University in England, doing English Lit. Which was all fine and dandy, it's a decent Uni and had lots of other foreign students, and I learned phrases like "Flippin' heck" and "Eee by gum". After that, I went to London to do my Masters at UCL, where I learned no decent cockney rhyming slang, dammit. England was cool, but I loves me Sweden. 14. What was your favorite music, group, singer at 17? Do you listen to them today? Did your parents ever break your records? Did you play an instrument or in a group? Indie, brooding indie (Smiths.. Cure etc, anything miserable, basically), I also loved REM and Peter Gabriel. I still like everyone I liked then. I played the guitar in several attempts at bands formed by my friends and I. 15. Tell us about your prom... Theme, date, outfit. What dance was popular then. What was your "after the prom" fun. I dare you to post a picture of yourself, your date We didn't do proms, but we did have a sort of leavers disco, which I didn't attend, it was sort of uncool to actually attend. 16. Did you belong to any after school clubs or sports? Were you ever in the newspaper because of these activities? Yup, football (soccer). I was on the school football team. My favourite sport ever, I continued playing football for a team in an amateur capacity until only last year actually, then work got in the way (and age), I still watch it, though. I was also in the drama group, oh how I loved to "project luvvie" as Hamlet, dahling. 17. The biggie and final question... Would you ever do it all over again if you could. Remember the drama and the hormones and the angst before you answer. Hmmm, some things I would, some things I wouldn't. It's all the damn hormones' fault that 17 was such a bloody awkward year for me. All in all, 17 was an age I listened to miserable music, lost my mother, ploughed all my energy into school work, played a lot of football, acted in plays, worked 2 jobs, dated the first of only 2 girls I'd ever date, had a salad cream fetish, had friends who thought they were Robert Smith, and had a cat called Frank. Damn, what a weird year 1988 was.... And that's that. Thanks to Linda for hosting, you can get details about it here. And Happy Birthday to her daughter! Löfbergs Lila's calling.... Cheers. |
