| dlstewart's Full Review: Gbc Plastic Binding Combs 3/8" Diameter Black 2... |
While this is not the most used size binding comb in the company, it is one that we keep on hand. Sometimes we prepare booklets that need a size smaller comb. Our customers prefer a black binding comb to other colors, so we buy GBC Black Plastic Binding Combs in the 3/8 Diameter.
Description
These binding combs come packaged 25 to the box. Each comb has a 55-sheet capacity. The spines are constructed from black plastic and have 19 teeth that feed through 19-hole punched material to be inserted into the spine. The 3/8 diameter and will hold 8 1/2 x 11 paper. The manufacturer says the spines wont scratch, chip, peel or discolor. They are designed for use in a binding machine.
Binding Machines 101
Here is a quick synopsis of binding machines in case you are not familiar with them. A binding machine punches rectangular holes in sheets of paper and binding covers that are to be bound. (In our case, the machine punches the standard 19 holes.) The machine has a spreading device that opens the plastic spines so that the hole-punched material slides over the teeth of the spine. Then the machine closes the spine, curling the teeth against the spine back and locking the material into place.
Our Experiences
I like using GBC products since they have proven reliable. These spines are a black color that while not glossy, they do reflect some light. The plastic spines are lightweight and measure 3/8 in diameter and are about 10 3/4 long.
The manufacturer states the capacity for these spines is 55 sheets of letter-size paper (8 1/2 x 11). There is a general rule for determining the correct size of spine to use. Measure the stack of material to fit inside the spine and then add 1/8 to the total measurement.
We mostly use these binding combs to bind material for customers. This includes product literature and sometimes proposals. These spines have always worked well. When preparing material, we use clear plastic GBC binding covers for the front and back, and sandwich the presentation material between the covers. Our paper stock is often regular 20-pound copier or laser paper. Rarely, but sometimes, heavier paper is used.
True to the manufacturers claims, these spines have never broken, chipped or peeled. Some of our bound literature is held in stock, and we have not noticed any color change in the spines. Using these black spines presents a professional image to our customers and potential clients.
Purchasing
These spines cost $3.29 per 25-count package from Staples.com.
Summary
There are 25 combs to a plastic box, and we have a few of these. Since this is not a size we use all the time, these few boxes will last us quite awhile. When we need to order more of this size, I will definitely be order the GBC brand.
I hope you found this review useful.
