Interesting (Maybe--Not Guaranteed) Trivia From Prehistoric Times (17th Birthday W/O)
Aug 13 '04
The Bottom Line Time-travel back to ye olden year known as 1970. Location: Mostly in Madison County, Indiana (We'd even put up a new bridge the previous fall!)
1. Who were your best friends, or were you a friendless geek? What was the most interesting fun that you had together?
(Besides Jesus and my folks). . .Diana, Evelyn, Karen, Mary, Landis, Marty, and Debbie--just to name a few--and, of course, my boyfriend, Gary. I don't know if you would call it interesting or not, but we just liked hanging together while eating and gabbing.
2. What was your favorite food? Have you out grown your fondness for it? Was this food involved in a food fight?
So many favorite foods--so little time! My kind of food fight had to do with willpower (just as it does now): the goal of not overeating my tempting favorites--and the food usually won!!! Somehow, I still managed to look babe-ish back then--but can't say the same for now. (sigh)
3. Did you have a pet- real or imaginary? Were you the teacher's pet. Maybe you were the animal- fess up!
I had several pets. At that time, I think that my very favorite pet was a sleek, lean, black cat named Thomasina. I'll have to ask Ron Long (adorable, young math teacher at school) one of these days if I were ever actually his pet or if that were just wishful thinking on my part.
4. What was your most memorable, life changing moment- in school or out. Did it involve any psychedelics?
Meeting Gary, my first really serious boyfriend. As for psychedelics, I was--and still am--drug-free.
5. Were you still a virgin at 17? Are you still?
Yes, both then and now.
6. What was the most wicked thing you did? Did anyone find out? Were you grounded or just thrown in jail?
I suppose losing my temper would be about the most wicked thing I ever did, because I was so goody-goody that I was like a major overdose of sugar!
7. How many guys or girls did you date when you were 17? Do you still keep in touch with them? Is your current mate jealous?
Other than a friendly junior prom date with my second cousin, Danny, the only person I actually went on a date with during this time was Gary. But there had been others I hung out with at church, school, and other social activities.
Gary came to Daddy's visitation this past February, and, before then, our recent socializing had included attending some of the same education-improvement meetings.
The closest thing to a current mate that I have is Johnny Angel, and we haven't been in contact for awhile. He's not the jealous type--though I think he's somewhat concerned that 29th_Candidate might be a tough act to follow, in spite of the fact that this was a case of unrequited love. However, he has absolutely no reason to be worried there! LOLOLOL
8. What was your favorite subject in school? Or are you a high school drop out? Did you get to skip a grade because you are a genius?
English, natch! My first-grade teacher thought I ought to be skipped, but I told her I wanted to take the grades as they came.
9. What was the make and the condition of the car you drove. Were you guilty of any traffic violations or worse? Were you randy?
1968 Camaro that was a kind of turquoise blue. I had it decorated with pink flower decals on the outside and lovebeads hanging from the mirror. Since it was also the second car, my dad drove it to work during the day (I rode the bus to school), and I got to have it at night. Daddy got teased by his co-workers about the "hippie car" that he was driving--but it was all in good fun!
You'll have to buy my book (details when it--one of three--is in-print) to find out about my traffic violations. No, I wasn't randy--but I did go to school with several guys named Randy (all of them studmuffins!)!!!
10. Did you know what you wanted to do with your life? Did you aspire to be a beauty queen, fireman or a Dentist? Or just be plain old brilliant and discover...
I knew exactly what I wanted to be: a special ed. teacher and writer with a husband and a whole bunch of kids. One out of four isn't bad.
11. Where did you live? The city, rural America, suburbia, out of this country... or in your own private, little world?
Rural America--AND in my own private, little world!
12. Sisters and brothers are, were, still are.....
How many? Were you an only child? Do you wish you were an only child? Did you see to it that you were?
Biologically, an only child but "adopted" several special friends as siblings.
13. Did you get into the college of your choice? Were you college bound? Did you end up with a great job flipping burgers? Are you famous now because of the choice you made then?
I definitely got into the college of my choice--and I did work in a fast-food establishment and a couple of truck stops when I was in my mid-twenties. And I'm famous now--with "in" added to the left end of "famous."
14. What was your favorite music, group, singer at 17? Do you listen to them today? Did your parents ever break your records? Did you play an instrument or in a group?
I had several favorite recording artists, not the least of these being The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Four Seasons, and The Supremes. My folks enjoyed my music, so I never had them to break any of my records. I played--and still do--several instruments with my primary one being the piano, and I added (as I still do) a little noise-pollution to the church choir.
Yeah! I still enjoy those artists and other great groups and artists of that time (as do many other fellow prehistoric creatures)--which is the reason that God created oldies stations!
15. Tell us about your prom... Theme, date, outfit. What dance was popular then. What was your "after the prom" fun. I dare you to post a picture of yourself, your date.
I attended both junior and senior proms, but the one I attended at age 17 was my junior prom. At the time, I was trying to catch the eye of our choir director, George, and really wasn't romantically-interested in anyone else. George was almost 12 years older, recently-divorced, and not interested.
As I had been nominated as one of the three prom princess candidates, it was required that I would arrive escorted instead of going stag (Thinking back on this, I can't help but wonder "why" a prom princess candidate had to be escorted instead of simply being "complete" as herself. Oh well! Don't even get me started there...).
Anyway, I had this step-cousin named Danny.
His mom (a widow with five kids, with Danny being the only one still living at home) had married Uncle George back in 1967 (2 1/2 years before), and he and I had once been a little sweet on each other.
By then (spring of 1970) we just regarded ourselves as cousins--as if we'd actually grown up together as cousins--but we were comfortable with each other, so he made a nice escort.
I wore a floor-length, yellow dress and had my long hair styled around a headband of silk daisies.
The prom was held at The Indiana Roof, and I can't remember what the theme was--this in spite of the fact that I served on the theme and decorations committee for it. Remember, I've slept since then--quite a few times.
The crowned princess (Sharon) and her court (Penny and me) led the post-crowning dance with our prom dates, and the song the band played was Love Theme From Romeo & Juliet.
The post-prom took place back at the high school and featured a rock band that was more ridiculously-loud than good. Danny and I stayed for awhile but decided to go back home and rest before he made the 100-plus mile trip back to his home.
16. Did you belong to any after school clubs or sports? Were you ever in the newspaper because of these activities?
I belonged to several--among them: Future Teachers, FHA, 4-H, Sunshine Society, Junior Achievement, and Drama Club.
17. The biggie and final question... Would you ever do it all over again if you could. Remember the drama and the hormones and the angst before you answer.
Not literally, because that was then but this is now, and I want to remember being seventeen the way it was in the sense of experiencing it at seventeen rather than going back to it with the mind of someone three times as old.
As I told Miss Robinson way back in first grade: "I want to take the grades as they come."
But that doesn't mean that I don't like to return there--and other places in my earlier years--in memory, and those songs I hear on my favorite oldies station often carry me back there in-style!
Well! That's about it!!!
Thanks for sticking around and getting to the bottom of this.

HUH!?!
Honest! No psychedelics in my system!!!
