Earlier this year (April 2009), I made my second purchase from Heartland America. It was for a Grundig G4 portable shortwave radio.
I was interested in this radio mainly for its recording capability so that I can record my favorite late night radio show and then listen to it during the daytime. So anyway, I've had my eye on this radio for a while, but most of the places selling it had it for $199 which was too much for me.
When I saw it on Heartland America's site for $99.99, I couldn't believe it. At first, I thought they must be refurbished units or something, but the product description did not say they were. To save even more money, I searched the internet and found a $10 off and free shipping coupon code to use, which saved me another $18! Of course, they tacked on their usual $2.99 processing fee. But even so, this was just such an unbelievable deal for this radio. Before placing my order, I checked it very carefully to make sure they hadn't automatically added anything I didn't want to my order, such as extended warranty or membership into their club. The one thing I forgot to do was to enter my email address on the order form. But somehow, they must have matched up my information with the order I placed last year because I still got an email to notify me that my order was shipped.
About a week later, I got my radio. It arrived in excellent condition and in factory sealed original packaging. I've been enjoying this radio very much ever since and have been using it to record my favorite radio show as I originally planned. It works great!
I had stated in my original review, that I would definitely order from them again. And I did just that. Needful to say, this was another very positive experience ordering from Heartland America.
My original review of Heartland America follows:
I don't really have a whole lot of experience dealing with Heartland America. But I just recently ordered a shortwave radio from them and have to say that I had a positive first time experience.
The ordering process was fairly quick and easy. There are a few things you need to be aware of during the ordering process, but as long as you read everything very carefully, you shouldn't have any problems.
First, the price they advertise for an item may be the price after a "rebate". Look for an asterisk next to the price to identify if this is the case. The "rebate" is in the form of a credit towards your next purchase, not a cash rebate. But this is clearly stated in the explanation next to the asterisk, so I wouldn't consider this to be a deliberate form of deception on their part.
Secondly, when you add the item to your shopping cart, they automatically add a charge for extended product warranty and a $29.99 charge to join their Value Shipping Club which entitles you to free shipping for a year. I didn't see the purpose of this since I was already being offered free shipping on my order. If you don't want either of these two extra charges, it's easy to remove them from your cart. Just click on the check boxes under the Remove column next to each item and then click the Update Changes button. The key here is to review your order very carefully and make sure there's nothing in your cart that you don't want.
The last thing to be aware of is that even though they offer free shipping, they do charge a $2.99 processing fee. To me, I just basically consider that to be the shipping charge, but even so, $2.99 is pretty cheap for shipping nowadays.
I ordered my radio on 9/23 but it was on backorder with a ship date of 10/5. They did send me an e-mail to inform me of this. They actually shipped my radio out on 10/2 and I got another e-mail to notify me that my order was on it's way. My package arrived by UPS on 10/8, about two weeks after I placed the order, which is not too bad considering it was on backorder. I also checked my credit card statement online and noticed that they did not charge me until the radio was shipped, a good thing!
The radio is great! I've had a few days to play around with it now and I am very impressed with it's quality, performance and sound. It is an excellent radio for the price. I'm listening to the NLCS playoff game on the radio as I'm typing this.
Overall, I had no problems with my order from Heartland America. The ordering process was easy, price was low, shipping was quick and I'm very happy with the radio I ordered. I can't comment on their customer service though, since I didn't need to use them, and hopefully never will. I definitely would not hesitate to order from them again if I see something else I want.
