I put in a lot of hours researching which wireless router to get for my home, and I finally decided on the WNR854T because it seemed to provide very fast connection speeds. I bought it when it first came out and most of the reviews were positive. This was because it was so new, no one had an opportunity to evaluate its long term reliability. Apparently I, and a growing number of consumers out there, are learning that while the router does it's job well, it has a limited life span. It died on me, spontaneously, in less than one year. I called customer service and apparently, the warranty on this unit is 305 days, which meant for me, the warranty had expired two weeks before it died. 305 days? A strange number. Why not 6 months or a full year. Strange that the router failed just after the warranty expired. I have a disturbing feeling that Netgear may not have grabbed this number out of thin air. I have a feeling they knew full well how unreliable this unit was when they started shipping it out, and set the warranty period to be just shy of its life span. A web search now will show numerous posting of angry customers who have a disturbingly similar experience....namely that this router dies in less than a year. Customer service was "very sorry" but becasue the warranty had expired, they could do nothing for me. I asked them if it was acceptable that a router that I paid $150 for should stop working in less than a year....and Netgear not standing behind their product. They only reply with "profound apologies" for this inconvenience, but cannot replace the router.
I could go into how this router performed and all of it's features. But the bottom line is this....even if this was the best performing router in the world (which it isn't), if you knew ahead of time it would die in 9 months, you'd be crazy to buy it. And that is exactly what happened to me, and other people who bought this router. But, if you want a decent router that has decent range, and looks kind of cool, and is backed by reprehensible customer service, then this one is for you.
