Not a product for Grandma (Reply to this comment)
by grahamh1947
I recently purchased this product from Best Buy while vacationing in Florida. I am from a generation that expects the telephone to respond with an immediate dial tone each and every time the receiver is lifted and further expects each call to go through the first time just the way conventional phones have worked for the past fifty years of my life span. If you expect the same, this product may not be for you. One of the ads on the magic Jack site claims that even your Grandmother could use it. I disagree for the following reasons:

I was able to set up the magic jack and obtain my telephone number with relative ease. I was also quite thrilled ro get a strong dial tone whch sounds identical to a regular land line the first time that I lifted the receiver. However the first call that I made, did not go through and I received another dial tone several seconds after dialing. This has happened on numerous occasions since purchasing this product just four days ago. Also, I tried to connect the jack to a friends PC and was unable to get it to launch. I was able to quite easily obtain a technician through the chat line who helped me launch the product after following steps to update the product and several other suggestions relating to the operating system of my friends PC.

Today, I called a friend within the USA and the quality of the call was so bad that I called her back on her cell phone thinking that the problem was related to her land line. However the sound quality was equally as abismal on her cell phone.

Through research on the Mgicjack help menu, I was able to solve the problem by restarting the magicjack.

Please do not get me wrong, I think that this is a good product if you have a tenacious enough nature to solve these problems and have a moderate understanding of computers.

However, if you expect a mere plug and play product that your Grandmother can use, then this product may not be for you.

I LIKE IT (MagicJack) (Reply to this comment)
by eddiemsmith
I got my MagicJack during the past Thanksgiving weekend and, so far, I like it. RadioShack had them for $29, so I decided to give it a shot... and I'm glad I did.

From what I've observed, it's not perfect, but it does work and works relatively well. It won't replace my landline nor cell phone, but I plan to make good use of it, particularly when traveling.

It did make me consider giving up the long distance service on my landline phone. Haven't done it yet, but it's a thought. With LD service already covered with MagicJack and my cell phone, but might not be practical to keep paying AT&T.

I think MagicJack's worth the free trial. Like I stated before, it's not perfect, but it does work.

Very well written.... down to the smallest details (Reply to this comment)

I bought a magicjack for myself, then actually gave it to an overseas family member. (big hint-- they can now call the US... for FREE) but that's not the point here...

VERY well written review. just had to comment on that, and interestingly enough, I don't think you're an employee. my experience was 100% the same as yours. the only reason I haven't bought another magicjack is because there is no option to turn off the caller ID. you can hack and spoof and do it, but I'm not into doing all that right now. blocking caller ID is a good thing, unless you want to be deluged with telemarketer calls day and night.

Why??? (Reply to this comment)
by treasuregift
I found this review complete and honest, I have to wonder why, when people write a well written, concise and complete review, some readers accuse the writer of being an employee or other interested party of the product/item reviewed? I have had this happen to me, I tend to be very concise as well as I use proper terminology in respect to the company and product names, if we wrote sloppy reviews would that make it more believable? Just my thoughts... well written review! Look for mine soon! :)

ps I don't work for MagicJack either. :)

Good Review???? Hmmmm....... (Reply to this comment)

I got to know about Magic Jack from a long time buddy who lives in Cleveland, uses the service and swears by it. I'm inclined to believe your account and wl'd love to purchase one but i confess ur account ,though very detailed and helpful, seems too explicit to have been written by an uninterested party. U may not be an employee but u sure work hard at promoting the company better than the owner.

No, I'm not an employee. Sounds like you have a review to write and post here. I'd love to read it.

Why were the negatives not mentioned? (Reply to this comment)

Maybe it is for you, not for me! Just look closer before you commit yourself. Read the terms of Service closer for future commitments and look for customer service links, then try to follow one. Sometimes the up front costs are not the only costs and not always in dollars. I wonder if one of their employees wrote this review???
