My Web of Trust (...as of 8/18/04)

The Bottom Line Here's a list of all those in my Web Of Trust and why they're there.

My Web of Trust.

I'm picturing this as being useful...

...To myself, as a reminder of why I’ve added everyone to the list.

...To people looking for ideas of who to add to their web of trust.

...To people with some free time to blow and want to read some good articles.

I plan on updating the list as it grows.

Generally, this is what I look for in my web of trust:

1) Concise. This doesn't mean the review has to be short. It just means that after I read it (or halfway through it) I'm not feeling like the person rambled for 1,000 words when they could have said the same thing in 500 words.

2) Short on plot. (I usually spend most of my time in music, movies, and books.) I really don't care about hearing details about the movie or story's plot (or every track of a CD). I seem to be in the minority here at Epinions on this issue, because there are tons of articles here that are basically 80% retelling of the plot and 20% why they the liked it or disliked it.

There's nothing wrong with that, it's just not what I like. So, most of the people below let me discover the plot for myself when I choose to see the movie or read the book.

3) Interesting. I like reading people who tell me something that I wouldn't have known or thought of. This could be background information on the band, movie, book, or insight into a hidden theme.

I'm not saying my reviews accomplish the three things listed above. But, since that's what I like to read, that's what I try to write. So, at the least, my reviews are an attempt to do those things.

Enjoy yourself…

Joshua

Okay...he's only written 4 reviews and he might be in retirement already. But, he went to high school with me and I like his taste in movies...and, also, he's made some really good short movies...and, also, it's my web of trust, so I can do what I want with it.

He makes a reference to the high school we went to....ah, the good old days.

What Were They Thinking?
Did he really give 4 stars to a movie that has five minute shots with no dialog of people walking? Yes...he did. The movie is called Gerry.

If you read Paul's reviews for a while, your CD collection is bound to grow, because with each glowing review you feel like you're incomplete without this CD in your collection.

I was introduced to a wonderful album through this review. Great article. Great album.

…when they wrote this sentence: "The Lone Ranger sleeps with a pair of cap guns, right down the hall from John F. Kennedy and Elvis Presley in a nursing home in Texas." It makes sense in the context of the article.

Just about perfect reviews in my opinion. Concise. Organized well. Not too much plot. Thoughts on the message of the story. Absolutely nothing to complain about.

She always has great reviews. But, I think she’s at her best when she’s reviewing kids books. I love the way she looks deeper into the story than what’s simply on the page.

I can relate to this guy. He puts every CD he buys in a year on his profile page. I love that. Also, I feel like he stole this quote from his Songs About Jane review from my life (replace “indiegoth” with…well, anything but indiegoth)…

“My wife has this uncanny knack for pointing out the music that I should be noticing, but am too lost in my own little indiegoth world to give the time of day to. Sometimes life above ground is every bit as excellent as everyone makes it out to be, and she's pretty much the only one who can make me realize that.”

By the way, he’s a really great writer as well. His articles are very fluid and easy to read. It’s like talking to your buddy.

What needs to be said? If you’ve spent much time at all on Epinions you know the Doc. Somehow she’s able to read everyone’s reviews on the whole site and write her own. She’s some sort of medieval superwoman.

Answer: Top Reviewer or Advisor in…Online Stores & Services, Movies, Games, Restaurants & Gourmet, and Hotels & Travel…

I’m thinking…The Doc has it made!!!

Here’s how the Doc’s day must go.

Alarm clock…

Doc scratches head and says: “Hmm, I think I’ll buy something today at an online store…No, hold it, I think I’ll watch a movie…Actually, I feel like playing a game…Awhhh, forget it, I’m taking a trip to Europe!!”

Each article is better than the last. Unfortunately, he’s only been popping out about one a month lately. It’s better to have 1 great review a month than 15 average ones. So, I’m not complaining.

An expert on war movies of all sorts and varieties. He’s got that going for him. Oh, yeah….and, he actually writes short reviews!!! It’s not a common thing around here to see short reviews of the Very Helpful persuasion, but George has managed to do it. Occasionally, a bit too much plot for me, but always to the point. Want to “watch a good movie tonight” (especially a war movie)? See George.
