About Me: Life Ain't Easy Bein' a Pug!

Now a Pocket PC that you can afford!

Written: Sep 13 '01
Pros:excellent value, simple sync, easy tap screen
Cons:monochrome, small memory
The Bottom Line: An affordable solution for those who want to use it for it's "bare bones" features.

I bought this PocketPC brand new on Ebay for $225.00. That isn't a bad deal for this particular model. It comes with 206Mhz processor and 16Mhz of RAM. Not real powerful, but you can buy accessories to expand the memory. The downfall is that they cost nearly as much as the unit itself.

PROS
Very easy to sync with your PC. Comes with a USB cable and it syncs very fast and never an error.

Comes pre-installed with Pocket Excel, Pocket Word, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Money, Windows Media Player and a couple other bells and whistles.

Expansion includes: Infrared detector on top if you would ever upgrade to use that ability, headphones jack, and the plugin at the bottom to enable yourself to slip on an expansion pack to use more flash memory.

Stylus is hid with a sleek design inside the pocket PC, you just push the button and a spring loader mechanism pops it right out! Never had a problem with it, works great!

Uses the WindowsCE OS. It's a very easy to use, simple operating system. If you're familiar with Windows, you should have no problems figuring this out

Tap screen is very precise. You do not have to tap hard and you have the option of using the stylus, upgrading to a keyboard, or voice input

Has Internet capabilities if you upgrade with a PDA modem

CONS
Obviously the biggest downfall to the unit is the monochrome screen - the reason why the unit is so affordable. It is in black and white and can be hard to see in the dark or at night time, HOWEVER I feel that the unit's backlight is very adequate and I've never had a problem viewing the screen. For me, it doesn't matter that it is not in color. I would have rather saved the money. For others it may be a bother. This is entirely a personal preference issue.

I wish the unit would have come with more memory preinstalled. I was trying to just add a game of "tetris" to it and could not get it on there due to lack of memory. So the unit is pretty bare bones unless you want to sink more memory into it for an upgrade.

In summary I would recommend this unit to a college student, a housewife or someone who isn't going to be a "power PDA user". It's very affordable but you definitely get what you pay for. I am very happy with mine, but I don't use it for surfing the Internet or playing tons of games. Basically I use it to take notes to myself and remind myself of upcoming appointments and it does the job just fine. Would recommend to users who want it for the simple functions.
