| swanton00's Full Review: Crash Team Racing for PlayStation 1 |
I week or two ago I borrowed this game from my friend. Well, it's a two year old game so why would I really want to play and review it? Simply because I had heard it's a good game. I started to play, and right from the start, I knew it was a winner! With it's many courses, modes of play, hidden things, and weapons, it will keep you playing for along time. Beware.......if your buying this game because it's a Crash Bandicoot game, you might want to rent or borrow first. CTR (Crash Team Racing) is nothing like the other Crash games, it's a battle cart racer. I love the game, but there are some who couldn't get used to this.
The CTR Adventure
This is the main single player mode of the game. There's different worlds with each having a number of races to go through. Each one you race, to win you must place first. You will receive a trophy. These trophies will be needed to open new tracks and get to the bosses. Beat the boss of that world to unlock another world. Once the boss of a world is complete you can go back to the tracks of that world again. This time you can do two things. One is sorta a race against the clock mode with Timer Boxes where each one you collect with stop the time for a 1, 2 or 3 seconds. Winning will get you a Relic, which I'm unsure of what they are for. The other thing is to have a regular race and place first to get something called a CTR Coin, but you have to collect three golden letters in the race, CTR. You can get new racers in this mode, but it takes a while. Each character has different stats, which will make some better then the others at certain courses.
Multiplayer
Multi Tap is able to be used for three or four player games. CTR offers three multiplayer modes. One - a single race with the track of your choice. Two - Cup. It's a set of four tracks to race in. The better you place after each one, the higher points you get. Once all four are done, the scores are added and the winner is the one with the most points. Three - Battle. This is possibly my favorite multiplayer mode. You and the other human player(s) will choose one of I think 5 battle fields. There is all the weapons plus additional ones able to use. You can play battle two ways. The first is points. Each your enemy, you get a point. First one to get the number of set points wins. The other way is life. Get hit, lose a life. You are done with when all the set number of lives is gone.
Other Modes
Ok, not much to say here. CTR has three other modes to talk about. The first is simple the Time Trail. It's where you can practice your speed and race against the clock in any chosen track. You can save a replay of what you did after a try. If you wish you can use that replay to create a ghost driver opponent to race against and try to beat your own time. Arcade is just a way to get a quick race. Do a cup or a regular race. Choose the track, practice the track and master the track! Finally you can do a Battle with AI players It's all the same as the multiplayer one though.
Story
CTR has a bit of a story. Nothing to exiting, but at least they thought of something. Some evil alien dude is trying to turn the world into a concrete parking lot. He claims he is the fastest cart racer ever! Well, the people of Crash's world want to fight. So the alien will race the fastest driver of this world. So Crash's friends, enemies and even Crash himself of course, are having some races of there own to determine who will face the alien for the race for earth!
Graphics
The graphics are not so bad. When racing you get a rear view of your character. They don't look blocky at all which is pretty good for a two year old racing game. As well, nothing really looks blocky. I haven't come across a choppy moment in CTR which is good. The backgrounds look good and detailed. Not much pixels, even when getting close to walls, which is also good. That's about all I can say for that.
Sounds & Music
Well, this is about the flaw of the game. Sounds are all right and music is nothing good. For all the time I have been playing CTR I never noticed any music. There is music but I just never noticed it. That's because it's nothing catchy or good. The game could be better if there was an option to completely turn off the music. Crashing, exploding and shooting sounds good, turbo and all. Just the music is nothing good.
