Impertinent Thoughts on Pertinent Subjects XLI

The Bottom Line Blackout weaves its way through the city...

Another month, another dollar...

* It's amazing how small groups of words can make the crappiest, suckiest, sh*ttiest days at work go away in no time. For me, those small groups of words were first from Pearl Jam's email list: "Special Boston Show Added," and then, a week later, from The FleetCenter's email list: "Second Pearl Jam Show Added!". Mmmm, two Pearl Jam shows in about a month's time when I didn't think I'd get to see them this year...and no crappy six month wait in between giving them my money and seeing the show. WOO HOO!

* It's time for crap covers to go. Yes, I'm talking to you, Toby Lightman, and your crappy cover of Real Love. And I'm talking to you Wyclef Jean, and your crappy cover of Fortunate Son. Covers as a whole are becoming annoying. I've always thought a band should play covers so that when they write original material, it will be judged next to something truly good, but this releasing it as singles crap has to stop!

* Besides the fact that Rich Robinson released his pretty good solo CD last week, there was other good news for fans of The Black Crowes. Supposedly, Rich and Chris have had meetings with their former manager, Pete Angelus about reforming the band. About damn time! I liked Chris' new album, but he really needs Rich to help him with his songwriting. Now, if Chris could just convince Rich to play bass and have them get Marc Ford back in the band with Audley Freed on guitars, then that would be a lineup worthy of some excitement!

* Am I the only one who is getting sick of the Black Eyed Peas? They didn't bother me and if I came across one of their singles on the radio, I'd leave it on. But they're just getting played to death now. If I never here Let's Get It Started (or the original version) ever again, it will be too soon.

* People can romanticize how cool it was for Phish to play their last show in some tiny town in Vermont (where they were formed), but it turned into a crappy situation for fans...next time one of you big jam bands wants to play a last show, pick a big football stadium with paved roads and plenty of parking.

* Speaking of crappy situations, you think those people on the boat who were Dave Matthews fans still are?

* You know what I hate? That every time that craptacular Jet song Cold Hard B*tch comes on, I leave it on thinking it's an old AC/DC track, only to never learn. I wish I could tie that band up and subject them to a Mary Kate and Ashley Olson movie marathon...

* So let me get this straight: one of the male American Idol jagoffs has turned The Darkness' I Believe in a Thing Called Love into a, *sigh*, ballad? Ugh, just ugh. If American Idol exists, fine, but don't start ruining good rock songs.

* Can someone explain to me why Jack Johnson is popular?

* The new Green Day single is great stuff...here's hoping the new U2 single is just as good. I haven't heard the new Good Charlotte song yet, maybe that means radio will ignore them (hey, I can dream right?)

* If I'm Jay Z, there's no way I do a tour with R Kelly. Hell, if I'm anyone, there's no way I do a tour with R Kelly.

* I guess money talks with Wes Borland after all...he's now back with Limp Bizkit. A shame that the only member of the group that seemed to have the slightest bit of integrity/artistic ambition, caved in to Fred f*cking Durst.

* Here's wishing a speedy recovery to Stones drummer Charlie Watts, who's battling cancer, and to Kinks brother Dave Davies, who's recovering from a stroke.

* He has an excellent new series on FX (Rescue Me), but Denis Leary is finally following up his hilarious A*shole song with a new song. Merry F*ckin Christmas will be out in November.

* Speaking of Christmas, Barenaked Ladies are doing a Christmas album that will come out in October. They might actually be able to pull it off with some aplomb.

* So according to Beenie Man's management, lines like "Queers must be killed" are "metaphorical." Yeah, and Mariah Carey is just misunderstood...

* ARTISTS WITH NO TALENT WARNING: This fall, new albums by Simple Plan and Chingy will be released. This will result in radio shoving them down your throat. But trust me, there IS better music out there. There's also an artist WITH talent releasing an album: Eminem, but after his D12, um, bowel movement, who knows if it will be as worthwhile as his last two releases.

* If there's any justice in this world, Velvet Revolver's Fall to Pieces will become twice as big a crossover hit as Audioslave's Like a Stone was...that's the first song that's really hit me with an emotional punch in quite a while.

* Five songs I can go without hearing ever again: Meant to Live by Switchfoot, Turn Me On by Kevin Lyttle, Breaking the Habit by Beavis Band, Roses by Outkast, and Broken by Seether, which is of course only garnering airplay because it features Amy Lee.

* And lastly this month, George Shrub is so stupid that he used the Foo Fighters' Times Like These as a rallying song at one of his campaign stops. I guess someone should have told ol' Dubya that the Foos appear on the anti-Bush compilation Rock Against Bush Vol.2. What's next George, using a Pearl Jam song?
