If every airline did business like Southwest, they probably would all be profitable. I work in the field of public safety. When I make vacation plans, often times I have to change them due to some emergency or an unforeseen circumstance. If you try to change your flight with another airline, even if you're attempting to book a more expensive flight and willing to pay the difference, they tack on an additional $100 change flight fee. With Southwest, the change is simple. And if you book a cheaper flight, you get a credit for the difference. Southwest if usually the cheapest carrier but even if it isn't I go book Southwest just because I know it is easy to change my flight if needed. Recently I booked a flight for Thanksgiving. The fight was just a few dollars more expensive than US Air. A week later, I checked the fares and noticed the price went down. I went to Southwest.com and entered my confirmation code. I put in the same flight information and re-booked it. I got a credit for the difference. I'm glad I didn't book the US Air deal. Now Southwest is cheaper, plus.... if something does come up, I can change the flight again.
Don't forget to check in 24 hours in advanced so you don't have to sit in the middle of two smelly people. Southwest isn't the most luxury of all airlines but it does get your from point A to point B at a reasonable price and without worry.
